ELEMENTARY ART TEACHER POSITION 

(Maternity Leave: mid-August 2024 - December 2024)

DESCRIPTION:

We seek a dynamic, experienced, culturally-aware teacher for a progressive Montessori-inspired program that honors educational best practices to teach Visual Arts instruction in 1st-6th grade following a curriculum aligned with National Arts Standards. As a co-curricular teacher, the successful candidate will lead art lessons that provide each student with avenues for cultural exploration while deepening each individual learner’s basic craftsmanship skills. The candidate will plan and prepare students for visual art exhibitions throughout the building, while evaluating student performance and growth. Co-Curricular teachers work closely with other teachers to develop interdisciplinary learning experiences and to support students’ social emotional learning. All teachers attend regular meetings and observe, advise, and serve children in the areas of student needs, preparing the classroom environment, curriculum development and delivery, classroom routines, family communication, and record keeping. Elementary Co-Curricular Teachers report to both the Director of Strategic Initiatives and the Director of Elementary. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Prioritize the safety and well-being of all students
  • Lead academic and behavioral routines
  • Maintain professional communication with peers and families and exhibit a receptive and collegial demeanor
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty to enhance curriculum and community 
  • Perform arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, monitoring, and other support duties as needed
  • Participate in and support special events/activities
  • Participate in professional development initiatives
  • Lead students 1st - 6th grade in mixed age level classroom visual arts lessons 
  • Support Music Teacher in teaching chorus ensembles in weekly rehearsals
  • Support students for school performances, including the Winter Concert 
  • Design a collaborative community art piece to be shared at the end of December with families

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts degree required; MA in education preferred
  • Experience with a variety of instructional methods and multi-age learning environments, strongly preferred familiarity with Studio Habits of Mind and Teaching for Artistic Behavior philosophies
  • Skills in both 2d and 3d forms of making is encouraged but not required
