TITLE: High School Athletic Director/Assistant Principal
LOCATION: Sumner Academy
The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.
With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.
JOB GOAL : The Assistant Principal/Athletic Director position provides assistance in the supervision of the following areas: curriculum, instruction, building operations, student/staff management. Additionally, the Assistant Principal/Athletic Director within the school will manage and coordinate interscholastic athletic programs for within the assigned school at Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools. This position reports to the assigned Principal
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
  • Maintain and coordinate data driven focus on student academic and social and emotional learning through continuous improvement of instruction as evidenced by student achievement or growth.
  • Building and sustaining relationships with all stakeholders (building principal, students, parents, building staff, and district personnel).
  • Assist the building principal with facilitating communication between staff, students and/or parents when evaluating situations, solving problems and/or resolving conflicts while managing a positive, orderly, and safe building climate.
  • Support the building principal in managing the fiscal, operational, and technological resources of the building that focuses on effective instruction and the achievement of all students.
  • Participate in the selection, development, engagement, and retention of high qualified staff.
  • Complete and discuss classified and teacher performance on a regular basis meeting the expectations of the performance appraisal process and timelines outlined by KCKPS board policy and Kansas Statutes.
  • Provide professional development for staff through observation, coaching and support to ensure a growth mindset for all.
  • Assist the building principal with serving as building communicator for district information with all staff.
  • Participate in Professional Development, PLC, workshops, etc. to gather and convey information.
  • Supervises operations in conjunction with and in the absence of the principal.
  • As Athletic Director follow rules and regulations of KSHSAA, including preparing eligibility lists, submitting schedules, dues, team records, and other pertinent documents according to requirements.
  • Prepare and maintain the budget for District's interscholastic athletic programs.
  • Ensures that all applicable laws and regulations relating to athletics are applied and followed, including Title IX and other federal laws and regulations, state laws and regulations.
  • Work in collaboration with Administration, Community Organizations, and state athletic partners to promote and continually improve the athletic program.
  • Prepare and oversee district athletic calendars for events and facilities.
  • Plan and coordinate transportation and permits for all practices and competitive events.
  • Supervise and support contracted Athletic Trainers.
  • Evaluate sporting equipment and its replacement.
  • Oversee academic eligibility and performance of student athletes.
  • Assign and supervise teachers for extra duty work or student supervision.
  • Assist in the development and maintain the athletic handbook and communicate information through mandatory parent, student, and coaches' meetings to review expectations pertaining to the athletic programs.
  • Partner with students, parents, coaches, and school staff to properly report all athletic injuries as well as provide training to appropriate parties to minimize injuries.
  • Assist Building and Grounds team to ensure district fields and facilities meet athletic needs and recommend repair or maintenance in a timely manner.
  • Verify all athletes meet state eligibility to include required forms and documentation prior to competition.
  • Plan, supervise, and attend onsite athletic events, summer camps, and required KSHSAA events.
  • Partner with building administration to hire, train, and evaluate athletic coaches.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's Degree and currently hold or be eligible for a Kansas Certification, Building Administrator.
  • A minimum of five years of successful experience as a middle school/high school teacher.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of methods of effective instruction. Willingness to collaborate as an integral part of a collaborative team.
  • Prior technology proficiency for systems used in education.
  • Ability to work effectively with students and parents from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to plan, organize and complete activities and/or programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. This includes maintaining and keeping the athletic webpage and social media updated and current.
  • The ability to work effectively with teachers to help them improve their performance in the classroom.
  • The ability to think critically, provide meaningful feedback and problem solve regarding issues in building administration.
  • English as a Second Language endorsement preferred or be committed to obtaining that endorsement.
  • Prior experience as Coach or Athletic Director.
  • First aid and CPR certification
COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION:
Maintain effective working relationships with students, district staff, parents and community. Possess the ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication, to enhance a cooperative action to meet educational needs of students.
REASONING ABILITY:
Must have the ability to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, precents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; computer operations and management information systems.
