Description
Performs semi-skilled or skilled work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of buildings, utilities, machinery and/or equipment; may coordinate activities of subordinate maintenance workers; does related work as required.
An employee in this class performs specialized mechanical work in a manual trade or as a skilled journeyman in one or more crafts. Work may involve the maintenance and repair of wastewater transmissions and water treatment and distribution machinery and mechanic equipment such as pumps, engines, motors, electrical fixtures, switches; heating and air conditioning devices and related equipment. Work at this level requires considerable skill and may include replacing and repairing plumbing fixtures, replacing plaster and laying bricks or performing carpentry work. Employees work independently using hand tools, power tools and various precision measuring and testing instruments. Assignments may involve locating defective parts or determining the cause of malfunctioning machinery. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level technical or supervisory employee who reviews the work through inspections for desired quality. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate maintenance workers.
Essential Job Functions
Performs carpentry, plumbing, masonry or mechanical repairs on buildings, structures and equipment.
Repairs doors, locks, window frames, tables, chairs, builds cabinets, shelves and other wooden fixtures and furniture.
Coordinates the maintenance of lift stations.
Works with copper tubing, copper pipe, galvanized and PVC pipe.
Greases motors and pumps.
Performs basic plumbing and pipefitting tasks.
May rod sewer lines and lay and replace water or sewer lines.
Repairs water lines and installs water meters and fire hydrants.
Performs semi-skilled manual labor in the maintenance and construction of City streets.
Raises and lowers manholes and performs the rough masonry work involved.
Assembles forms for sidewalks and curbing and works as a cement finisher, works with concrete, cement and mortar performing basic construction work.
Coordinates and participates in painting equipment and buildings.
Ensures basic maintenance accomplished such as changing light bulbs, switches, ballasts, timer motors and performing basic electrical work.
Equipment Used/Job Location:
Works outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Uses various hand and power tools, air compressor, and jackhammer; asphalt cutter, pumps, tamper air compactor, generator, grinders.
Operates and maintains Hand and power planers, sander, and power saws.
May operate a vehicle
ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
May be required to shovel dirt, dig, pry;
May be required to climb ladders;
Performs basic plumbing and pipefitting tasks;
Sharpens tools and makes minor repairs to equipment;
Performs all other related duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
High school graduate or GED, plus two years experience in the general construction or maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds and equipment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Possession of a valid Florida commercial driver's license CDL "Class B" or higher or to be acquired within the first six (6) months of employment.
Skills
Knowledge of a variety of the skilled trades and crafts;
Knowledge of Confined space, equipment operation, pumping operations, and street maintenance
Ability to perform semi-skilled or skilled trades maintenance tasks;
Willingness to perform heavy manual work for an extended period under varying climatic conditions;
Ability to drive a vehicle;
Ability to read, write, and understand assignments in English.
