The Executive Director of Haas Digital will manage the design, development, delivery, and technical support of a portfolio of face-to-face, online and blended academic courses and programs offered across a variety of disciplines and audiences at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business. In this leadership role, s/he will manage a team that serves a demanding professional school audience comprised of 250 Faculty and 2300 students in six award winning degree programs (five of them granting masters or doctorate degrees). This individual will lead a high performance team that helps Faculty and Program Directors make distinctive, lasting and substantial improvements to their ability to engage Students, Alumni, and Lifelong Learners, and thereby build a great business school that attracts, develops, excites, and retains exceptional people.
The Executive Director will assemble and lead a team of instructional designers, instructional technologists, simulation developers, and project managers, as they consult and collaborate with Haas Faculty and Program Directors to design, develop and deliver our digitally enhanced curriculum. The Executive Director manages internal and outsourced teams to identify and support the digital pedagogical best practices required to effectively deliver learning outcomes. The Executive Director's leadership includes developing and managing a process that clearly articulates the goals, conceptualizes the innovative learning experiences, and delivers the digital pedagogy, including learning objectives, assessments, activity paths, content, and technology required to support Faculty delivery of highly engaging educational content to a unique higher education audience of experienced professionals seeking advanced (MBA or PhD) degrees, in an exceedingly competitive professional school environment.
Responsibilities
Works with clients, administration, and/or other communications professionals to create, develop, and implement long and short term strategic digital communications plans and/or projects, including ensuring that the desired message is delivered to appropriate target and/or broad general audiences.
Leverage user-centered design practices to build and operate highly engaging collaborative, multimedia, and learning technologies across the school - establishing Haas as a global leader in the integration of technology into state-of-the-art learning and collaboration experiences.
Manage an Instructional Design team. Lead online initiatives that partner with Faculty, program staff, and other curriculum and instructional design experts to conceive effective and innovative professional school digital instructional experiences.
Actively seeks out knowledge of new and emerging learning technologies and develops strategies on how to effectively deploy those technologies across a number of courses or programs.
Selects, trains, manages, motivates, evaluates, and, as necessary, takes corrective action, with professional staff responsible for producing a variety of digital communication pieces; may also manage support staff.
Manage an Instructional Design team - develop and lead a first of its kind Digital Program that partners with Faculty, UC Berkeley's Digital Learning Services group, and instructional design experts to conceive effective and innovative professional school digital instructional experiences by:
Developing and promoting an effective, research-based digital pedagogy acros scourses, programs and academic departments; communicating a consistent set of principles and standards for digital instructional design; and providing thought leadership for innovative, leading-edge instructional experiences.
Defining core digital pedagogical strategy for/with clients, and communicating same to project-based build teams in order to manage implementation and ensure quality.
Producing course outcomes and clearly articulating course objectives, requirements and assessment criteria to ensure interactive learning components use clear, engaging interactive design, are structured for maximum reusability, support blueprints, and meet required depth of knowledge.
Building instructional design guidelines and making sure guidelines are understood, applied and executed consistently by staff, freelancers, partners, and vendors.
Representing Haas' instructional design and learning technology needs and perspectives through publications, participation in professional organizations and inter-institutional collaboration.
Serving as the key contact with campus an.d external vendors to establish and maintain strategic partnerships key to courseware delivery.
Lead Course Development Project Management - build and manage the organizational capacity to lead course development projects that ensure the timely and successful launch of extraordinarily high quality, adaptive, engaging learning experiences that achieve every objective of the initial design blueprint by:
Collaborating with Faculty to identify course and learner outcomes
Developing the course syllabus, schedule, and instructional design blueprint
Identifying and managing the major milestones of course production, including effective assignment of team roles & responsibilities
Validating course authentication and quality assuring final versions for readiness.
Validate Learning Objectives Assessment - guide the roll-out and evaluate the long term viability of courses by:
Assisting faculty in considering and implementing in-flight changes to existing courses.
Reviewing course analytics on a regular cycle to assess course design patterns as they play out over time and with diverse audiences to identify and recommend creative solutions for course improvements.
Attract talent
Organize, develop, motivate, and manage resources, and establish and recommend changes to policies to realize the successful achievement of organizational goals and objectives.
Build an organization that acts with a high level of urgency and responsiveness in the in the event of production problems or other high impact issues/opportunities.

Embraces the principle of being a "student always" by engaging in opportunities for training, workshops, seminars, continuing education pertinent to the position, or at the suggestion of the supervisor.

Required Qualifications
Strong knowledge of all aspects of digital communications, including design concepts, various media, applications and long and short range strategic planning.
Strong knowledge of current trends and potential future developments in the digital communications field.
Strong skills to select, train, supervise, guide and evaluate subordinate staff, and take corrective action as required.
Strong written and verbal communications skills including active listening and political acumen skills.
Strong strategic planning, marketing, project management, analytical, critical thinking and problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills.
Strong skills to ensure production of high quality work within budget and time constraints.
Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience.
Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating a desire to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging to establish and maintain positive & professional working relationships with colleagues, students and team members.

Education
Bachelor's degree in technology and education, instructional design, broadcast communications, or a related field and / or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications
Broad knowledge of the organization, including its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure and current issues of concern.
Strong knowledge and skills in financial and personnel management, including management techniques, guiding principles, relevant laws, policies and best practices.
Master's or PhD degree in technology and education, instructional design, broadcast communications, or a related field.
