POSITION OVERVIEW

NYSCI has been a pioneer in the development of innovative and inclusive approaches to STEM learning and engagement since it was founded during the 1964-1965 World’s Fair. Today, we are developing new exhibits, experiences, and programs that align with national efforts to ensure equity and excellence in STEM and invite our broad and diverse audience to discover their own connections to it through exploration, experimentation, and problem-solving challenges throughout the museum, as well as beyond our walls. 

The Senior Manager of Foundation and Corporate Relations (“Senior Manager”) is a critical member of the Institutional Advancement team that raises $6-$7 million annually to support this work from private and public institutional funders such as foundations, corporations, and government agencies. 

NYSCI isseeking a highly motivated, self-directed professional with ample institutional fundraising experience and superior organizational, communication, problem solving, and writing skills who is able to thrive in a fast-paced museum environment and build strong relationships with funders and cross-departmental NYSCI staff to raise funds that support the work, mission, and institutional goals of NYSCI.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, implement, and manage a comprehensive and strategic fund development plan focused on expanding and enhancing corporate and foundation support for the institution.
  • Manage a portfolio of corporate, foundation, and government partnerships to solicit five- and six figure (and larger) philanthropic commitments that support NYSCI’s work at the museum, in the community, and around the world.
  • Write compelling, original grant proposals that increase donor awareness of NYSCI’s mission and programs, and encourage their engagement and financial support. 
  • Proactively seek new opportunities to enhance NYSCI’s mission and programs and help position the institution as a leader in the STEM education field.
  • Support the Chief Advancement Officer, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, and NYSCI leadership (Board, President and CEO and other cabinet members) to advance the institution’s mission and vision.
  • Build strong working relationships with other NYSCI departments to collaboratively shape programmatic goals, activities, and budgets that ensure alignment with NYSCI’s mission and facilitate positive long-term relationships with donors. 
  • Maintain a high-quality stewardship process for active corporate and foundation prospects and funders, working closely with program staff to schedule and lead meetings, events and site visits, and ensure the timely delivery of quality reports and evaluations.
  • Help create and build upon a culture of giving at NYSCI.
  • Other related duties, and responsibilities, as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Non-Profit Management, Business Administration, Museum Studies, Communications, a related field of study, and/or its work experience equivalent
  • 5 years of foundation/corporate fundraising experience, with an emphasis on grant writing, record keeping and stewardship systems, and experience working within a complex organization.
  • Commitment to the philosophy and mission of New York Hall of Science.
  • Experience in building a foundation and corporate relations program and proven ability to effectively inspire others.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, cultivate, solicit, and close grants from foundations and corporations.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct in-depth donor research with familiarity and/or experience utilizing RelPro, RelSci, iWave, Candid’s Foundation Directory, Foundation Search, and/or other prospecting tools.
  • Experience collaborating with diverse teams (within department, cross departmental, and with external partners) with the ability to effectively lead and manage projects as well as harness team creativity and translate it into effective fundraising.
  • Experience fundraising for a science center/natural history museum/children’s museum or STEM education institution is preferred but not required.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Superior writing skills and demonstrated ability to develop original proposals, reports, and accompanying financial materials. Strong ability to express ideas clearly both in written and oral communications.
  • Highly-developed project management skills and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks as needed based on deadlines and workflow.
  • Sophisticated understanding of record keeping and stewardship systems to support and grow a successful donor relations program (Raiser’s Edge, MS Excel, Word & PowerPoint, Google Docs & Sheets, etc.).
  • Occasional Evening and weekend availability to participate in events outside the workday schedule.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Stationary works station: The employee must be able to remain in a stationary sitting position for up to 8 hours a day with appropriate breaks.
  • Manual dexterity: The role requires the frequent use of hands for typing, writing, and handling office equipment.
  • Visual acuity: The employee must have the visual ability to perform extensive computer work for long periods, including reading and analyzing data on a computer screen.
  • Communication: The role requires the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and verbal forms.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree Preferred
  • Prior career experience in a science center, museum, or cultural institution is preferred
