Job Description

Job Description
Salary:

The ICCT is an award-winning, independent, global, non-profit research organization that supports the effective design and implementation of policies to address the impacts of the global transportation sector on climate change and public health. Our organization achieves this by providing high quality and timely data-driven research to public officials at all levels of government - city, state, national, regional and international - as well as to civil society and the media. The ICCT offers a mission-driven and culturally diverse workplace where intelligence, flexibility, transparency, and good humor are highly valued. Join our growing team of talented researchers with offices in Washington D.C., San Francisco, CA, Berlin, Germany, Beijing, China, New Delhi, India, and São Paulo, Brazil.

Over the past two years, several travel search engines, notably Google Flights, Kayak, Skyscanner, and Lite Flights, have begun estimating the climate impact of flights for consumers at the point of booking. Since 2013, the ICCT has advocated for emissions disclosure from booking platforms and has estimated that a US consumer can reduce CO2 attributable to their flight by up to 63% by choosing a low-emitting carrier. Beginning in 2023, the ICCT partnered with Google to serve as the technical Secretariat for the Transport Impact Model (TIM), which underpins emissions estimates provided by Google Flights and other booking platforms.

The ICCT seeks a highly motivated and committed individual to fill a 1-year Fellowship Position for the Aviation Program in Washington, DC, or Berlin, Germany. This position will focus on maturing low-carbon travel search tools for consumers.

You Will:

  • Work with ICCT’s Aviation Director, serving as ICCT’s primary point of contact with Google Flights to facilitate the TIM Advisory Committee (AC)
  • Collaborate with ICCT researchers to facilitate and collate research for developing recommended refinements to TIM
  • Collaborate with ICCT’s Communications Team to draft press releases, coordinate media communications for low-carbon travel search, and help Google communicate AC decisions to the industry and the press
  • Synthesize technical information into policy-relevant documents and presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Engage with external stakeholders, including government officials, multilateral institutions (notably ICAO), NGOs, academics, and other industries related to low-carbon travel search and business travel emission reductions
  • Other duties as assigned

You Have:

  • A Bachelor's degree (Master’s degree preferred) in environmental science, international relations, engineering, public policy, business administration, or a related field
  • Excellent project management, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Experience managing diverse stakeholder processes, including working with policymakers, NGOs, industries, and other stakeholders.
  • Quantitative, analytical, and research skills combined with strategic problem-solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills are required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint; familiarity with Google Drive is preferred.
  • Ability to travel internationally.
  • An understanding of aviation transportation systems and policies is preferred.

 Our Benefits

This is a full-time position (40 hours/week), based in our Washington, D.C. or Berlin, Germany office with a duration of 9-12 months. The starting hourly rate is $20.66 (DC) or annual rate of € 26,108 (Berlin) based upon education and experience. We offer an excellent benefits package, including health insurance, substantial paid vacation, transportation subsidies, and other benefits.

Application

Please submit a resume, cover letter, two relevant writing samples for which you are the sole author (preferred) or lead author and contact information for two references. Preference will be given to candidates whose cover letters directly address the position being offered. Applications without supplemental materials will receive less consideration.

We are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender, gender identity or expression, or veteran status. We are proud to be an equal opportunity workplace.
