Comprising of a skilled and compassionate team, the IU Health North Schwarz Cancer Center Radiation Oncology department focuses on delivering targeted and personalized care for patients undergoing radiation oncology treatment. The staff includes radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, medical physicists, nurses, dosimetrists, and other support personnel to all work collaboratively to ensure the highest standards of precision and safety in treatment delivery. Patients receive comprehensive care, from initial consultation and treatment planning to the actual radiation sessions, with a strong emphasis on minimizing side effects and enhancing overall well-being.
Nursing skills gained on this unit:
  • Familiarity with treatment protocols and the latest advancements in the field of radiation oncology
  • Providing thorough and clear education to patients about their radiation treatment, potential side effects, and self-care strategies.
  • Managing and alleviating radiation therapy-related symptoms, such as skin reactions, fatigue, and other treatment-induced side effects.
  • Learning radiation safety protocols
  • Collaborating with radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and effective patient care.

The Clinical Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of Indiana University Health, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. The registered professional clinical nurse (RN) is accountable and responsible for the provision and coordination of competent, evidence-based care along the care continuum, which includes assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The clinical nurse participates in decision-making, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to advance the patient plan of care, achieve outcomes and enhance operational efficiency. The nurse adheres to the ANA Scope and Standards of Professional Nursing and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements.
  • Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Radiation Oncology experience is preferred.
  • Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
  • Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
  • Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
