The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights (KCHR) is the executive branch agency charged with the eradication of discrimination in the Commonwealth through its enforcement of the Kentucky Civil Rights Act. To that end, KCHR receives administrative complaints of discrimination and moves them through an investigatory and administrative process to protect the rights of all Kentuckians to be free from discrimination in the workplace, public accommodations, and housing.
The Staff Attorney II position is for a highly-skilled attorney who has the ability to manage a caseload, conduct legal research, articulate sound legal reasoning both orally and in writing, and zealously advocate on behalf of the Commonwealth in state courts and administrative forums. The successful candidate must be able to multitask and possess a high attention to detail.
KCHR looks for individuals who have a demonstrated passion for civil rights and years of experience working in civil rights and justice-oriented positions, especially on behalf of underprivileged and marginalized communities and those within Kentucky’s protected classes.
KCHR seeks a talented attorney who understands and is driven by the belief that all Kentuckians deserve to be treated fairly and equally, no matter who they are.
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Initiating and conducting formal discovery.
- Preparing and presenting evidence at administrative hearings.
- Preparing and submitting complaints, motions, and briefs, and participating as lead trial counsel in state courts.
- Preparing and submitting motions and briefs and participating in oral argument before state appellate courts.
- Providing legal advice on cases assigned to Enforcement Branch employees.
- Conducting legal case status reviews with staff.
- Responding to requests pursuant to the Open Records Act.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
