Overview:

The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) is actively seeking applications for an Instructional Program Assistant (IPA) in Mathematics . This individual is responsible for supporting students and assist with programs in the Mathematics Department.

The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 1012) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program. It also serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry.

Responsibilities:

To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Teach Mathematics Investigations (MI) I/II Resource classes in the fall and spring
  • Set up Webworks for the semester
  • Supervise math department tutors in the math office
  • Provide instructional coverage when teachers are absent
  • Meet with students to provide academic support
  • Oversee a team of work service students and maintain logs of student work service hours completed
  • Advise students by providing them constructive comments on projects
  • Attend weekly team meetings and participate in all team activities
  • Supervise student makeup testing
  • Perform and coordinate related clerical tasks, i.e. maintain a set of problem set paper copies and keys, check out books and calculators to students
  • Participate in all community development days and faculty meetings and faculty development programs as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:

The required skills and experience for this position include:

  • A Bachelors degree in Mathematics or related field
  • Active participation in a collaborative team environment
  • Engagement in reflective professional practice
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work in a fast-paced, team environment with ability to function diplomatically and effectively at all levels

The preferred skills include:

  • Masters degree in related field
  • Tutoring or teaching experience
  • Bilingual

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Work is performed in an office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Substantial time is spent working on a computer. This role generally requires mobility, written and verbal communication, hearing and visual capabilities. However, reasonable accommodations, including assistive technology, may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform such requirements.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary and benefits are commensurate with training and experience expected at this level of employment. The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy offers an excellent comprehensive benefits package including health and retirement benefits. The State Universities Retirement System (SURS) is reciprocal with other Illinois public retirement systems such as the Teachers Retirement Systems of Illinois (TRS) and the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
