Overview

Communication of the understanding of why specimen collection requirements are what they are is key to success. The position requires the ability to maintain any equipment used by the phlebotomy team, train staff, manage the schedule with adequate coverage as needed, assess competency, interview, select new team members, evaluate staff performance, and manage disciplinary action as needed in compliance with department and hospital policies. The position may require teaching, purchasing, managing inventory, writing and implementing procedures and other duties as may arise.

Supervises the Phlebotomy team in all related functions as well as various clerical tasks of routine and specialized nature utilizing knowledge. Exposed to hazardous environments through the course of the work day.

Responsibilities

* Follow department policy in performing procedures ordered.

* Demonstrates the ability to use the hospital computer system in ordering tests, (limited) results reporting, printing test result reports, and printing various hospital reports.

* Follow departmental policy in collecting and processing specimens

* Adheres strictly to infection control and safety procedures

* Demonstrates the ability to accept extra delegated duties

* Considers patient's age, provides care properly according to age, and educates staff accordingly. These age groups include Neonates, Pediatrics, Toddlers, Pre-school, Pre-adolescent, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.

* Demonstrates the ability to work will with all customers, including patients, family, visitors, physicians, office staff, and co-workers. Customer satisfaction is an essential element of job performance.

* Schedules phlebotomist, front desk/receptionist, and couriers for all locations

* Perform routine phlebotomy duties.

* Visits non-laboratory customer locations to ensure compliance, staff performance and procedure validation.

* Performs or oversees the orientation of phlebotomists, front desk/receptionists, and couriers. Trains staff on new or revised procedures. Assesses or oversees the assessment of the competency and performance evaluations of staff.

* Assists with investigating and resolving problems related to the laboratory when involving phlebotomy or other specimen collection. Completes and/or assist others with completion of safety event reports, and addresses safety issues or complaints related to phlebotomy.

* Ensures the provision of quality specimens for testing assuring correct patient identification, using proper tubes and filling properly, documentation of all performance improvement forms and/or logs.

* Monitors specimen collection to ensure all draws are being performed in a timely manner.

* Monitor turnaround times and investigate delays when appropriate.

* Ensure phlebotomy service personnel maintain a positive client/patient-focused attitude.

* Work closely with technical staff to resolve issues before managing up to supervisor.

* Assume additional responsibilities as deemed necessary by Laboratory Supervisor or Director.

* Ensure proper levels of inventory are maintained.

* Provide leadership to non-certified phlebotomist by assisting in training, monitoring, and education.

* Ensure that the laboratory front office/reception and specimen management functions run smoothly on a day-to-day basis.

Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma or GED; must be a Certified Phlebotomist (see 1301HK) or have successfully completed a clinical training program which includes phlebotomy theory and practice.

Experience:

Previous phlebotomy experience and a demonstrable high-skill level in all aspect of venipuncture is required. Venipuncture in related professions is acceptable. Prior successful leadership of others is preferred.
