Job Description

The Instructor, Substitute position provides support for a U.S Department of Labor Job Corps contractor. The Job Corps program is a federally-funded residential training program. The mission of Job Corps is to provide career-ready technical and academic training and job placement assistance to program eligible youth ages 16-24.

Summary of Duties: Responsible for providing academic or career and technical training instruction to students in accordance with approved curricula. Provides students with basic direction in compliance with Department of Labor (DOL) and HLS.

Description of Duties:

  • Responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and promoting student learnin

in the absence of the regular classroom instructor.

  • Implement instructor’s lesson plans as outlined, assign student class work and maintain classroom control and

discipline.

  • Take attendance and ensure students are in dress code in accordance to center policy.
  • Leave a report for the instructor and include what assignments were completed and behavior of students.
  • Motivate and counsel students in areas of behavior, training, personal problems or study habits.
  • Coordinate with counselors and staff as necessary to resolve issues affecting student training.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work area that models high standards for a work environment.
  • Provide positive, quality customer service to students, staff and other center customers.
  • Ensure students learn and practice set behavioral expectations that support employability and social

development for career readiness success.

  • Maintains classroom discipline/classroom behavior management at all times
  • Emphasizes and enforces safety rules and regulations while in training
  • Checks and maintains equipment daily
  • Assigns lessons and corrects classroom papers
  • Administers tests to evaluate students' progress, records results, and issues reports to inform students of their

progress

  • Confers with counselors and teaching staff to obtain testing information and to gain insight

on student issues affecting the learning process

  • Provides support for all students through differentiated instruction.
  • Counsels students when adjustment and academic problems arise
  • Teaches expected behaviors and appropriate conduct
  • Maintains data related to attendance and grade records
  • Advises students of potential employment opportunities.

PROVIDE EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION

  • Follow curriculum guidelines, organizes program of practical and technical instruction, including demonstrations of skills required in trade
  • Maintain a strong instructional focus utilizing the elements of effective instruction
  • Communicate a high level of expectation to all students
  • Communicate clear learning goals to students
  • Adapt instruction to meet the needs of all students
  • Develop lessons and lesson plans that address various learning styles
  • Sequence content at an appropriate pace
  • Use appropriate level of questioning to promote understanding
  • Relate lesson content to prior and future learning
  • Require students to summarize information in written and/or verbal form
  • Appropriately recognize and reinforce individual student effort
  • Represent knowledge/information non-linguistically through a variety of methods
  • Organize students in cooperative or ability groups when appropriate
  • Require students to analyze and apply knowledge
  • Conduct ongoing assessments for learning

PROVIDE EFFECTIVE CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

  • Effectively and consistently enforce rules and follow procedures
  • Redirect students naturally and immediately without disrupting others
  • Be well-organized and have all materials, equipment, etc., ready for immediate use
  • Carry out smooth and effective transitions (e.g., from one activity to another, as students enter and leave the classroom)
  • Establish appropriate classroom rules and procedures that are clearly understood by all students

  • Participate in Professional growth opportunities and demonstrate professionalism
  • Participate in professional and/or community organizations or events
  • Complete routine assigned tasks and comply with DOL/HLS requirements
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues, stakeholders and students

Credentials:

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university

Certifications, Licenses, Registration

Valid state driver’s license;

Valid teaching credential/certification in state center is located.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
