JOB INFORMATION

Pure Water Plant Operator positions are responsible for daily operations activities of pure water facilities; operate, monitor, and adjust treatment processes equipment within the facility; regulate the flow of water between various stages of the treatment process; conduct special sampling protocols; maintain operating logs; keep records and reports; and perform other duties as assigned.
NOTES:
  • Employees in job classifications represented by AFSME Local 127 are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:
    4% effective 7/1/24
    2% effective 1/1/25
    5% effective 7/1/25
  • In addition to the scheduled general wage increases, the following special salary wage increase is also scheduled to take effect for Pure Water Plant Operators:
5% effective 1/1/25
5% effective 1/1/26
  • Eligible benefited employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply unless otherwise indicated.
CERTIFICATION: You must possess ONE of the following:
  1. A valid Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator's Certificate issued from the California State Water Resources Control Board.
  2. A valid Grade T3 Water Treatment Operator's Certification issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board.
LICENSE:A valid California Class C Driver Licenseis required at the time of hire.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

  • Possession of a valid Advance Water Treatment Operator Certificate (AWT3) issued from the California-Nevada Section of the American Water Works Association (CA-NV AWWA)/California Water Environment Association (CWEA).
  • Previous experience working with advanced water treatment processes.
  • An Associate's Degree or higher; or an equivalent level Community College certificate program in Water/Wastewater Technology or similar course work.
  • Experience using a Distributed Control System (DCS) (e.g., Emerson Westinghouse).
  • Experience using a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
  • Experience using a Water/Wastewater Information Management System (e.g., Hach WIMS).
  • Experience using an Enterprise Resource Program (ERP) such as SAP for asset management.
  • Computer skills.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes applicable to this position, which may include the following: confirmation of citizenship or legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review and exam (which may include drug and alcohol testing); reference checks; and fingerprinting. Fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report. All screening processes must be successfully completed before employment begins.
