A Director of Education is sought for The HistoryMakers, a national (501)(c)(3) nonprofit video oral history archive headquartered in Chicago, Illinois (http://www.thehistorymakers.org). The HistoryMakers is experiencing tremendous growth, and we are looking to hire someone to lead our efforts in both the higher education, public library and K-12 communities. This includes our training and licensing of The HistoryMakers Digital Archive; collaboration with K-16 educators on the development of curriculum materials and research projects utilizing The HistoryMakers content; and the management of our digital archive contests, fellowships, internships, and educational advisory boards as well as our annual Back to School With The HistoryMakers national service program; the marketing,
This position will also involve:
Creating and maintaining a comprehensive database of educational contacts in Higher Education and K-12;
Training students, educators, and the general public on the features and functionality of The HistoryMakers Digital Archive;
Assessing the effectiveness of The HistoryMakers Digital Archive andeducational materials in the classroom and in research, through rigorous program evaluations, program reviews, online surveys, in person visits, focus groups, etc.;
Supporting faculty and student research and teaching applications of The HistoryMakers Digital Archive through consultation, training, workshops, etc.;
Engaging faculty, students, librarians and others across institutions to explore collaborative and creative academic engagement with The HistoryMakers content;
Drawing connections between The HistoryMakers content and other primary source collections and materials, in order to demonstrate its contextual value;
Developing and packaging curriculum modules, lesson plans, and assignments to ease and encourage classroom integration of The HistoryMakers Digital Archive at both the K-12 and higher education levels;
Developing stand-alone or collaborative public programs, workshops, demonstrations, conference presentations, panel discussions, etc. to further promote and educate the education community on The HistoryMakers Digital Archive and content
Quantifying and explaining the effectiveness of educational initiatives to key stakeholders, executives, and board members
Coordinating and maintaining relationships with members of The HistoryMakers Higher Education Advisory Board, and leveraging their expertise in special projects/events
Position Requirements
Education : Master’s Degree in Instructional Design, Information Science, Education, History, or other relevant field required; Teaching or Curriculum Development certifications are preferred
Work Experience : 2 years of relevant professional experience supporting faculty with course design, or 2 years teaching experience in a relevant field
Technical Knowledge : Knowledge of, and experience with online teaching tools or digital content; experience with video content and born-digital material
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Highly proficient in MS Office, Word, Access. Excel
The HistoryMakers
The HistoryMakers, the nation’s largest African American video oral history archive(www.thehistorymakers.org), is a one-of-a-kind collection, housed permanently at the Library of Congress. Its website (www.thehistorymakers.org), accessed by millions worldwide, is sited in Wikipedia and used as a “go to” reference tool. Its digital archive has been licensed by colleges, universities, K-12 schools and public libraries for use by faculty, students and patrons and is growing in popularity in the wake of COVID19 and the focus on online learning. Within the next few years, The HistoryMakers will become the digital repository for the Black experience: providing much needed content, role models, success pathways and frameworks for a 21st century citizenry that has become increasingly less tolerant, divisive and economically and educationally disparate.
