The Heritage Health Clinic Dental Director provides leadership in the ongoing development of the dental program based upon community need, health behaviors of the population served, and the resources of the organization. They ensure that the dental program addresses Heritage Health’s philosophy of care, range of services, service priorities and clinical goals and objectives. The Clinic Dental Director is responsible for ensuring that Heritage Health dentists and dental staff are providing high quality care to patients, are practicing in accordance with national guidelines and ensuring HRSA requirements are being carried out at the clinical level. They are responsible for the clinical activities in the clinic and are a liaison between dental providers and administration.

Requirements

  • Completion of ADA accredited dental program required: Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).
  • Active Idaho dental license.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Certification through Drug Enforcement Agency and active Idaho Controlled Substance license required; must be able to secure credentialing through identified agencies.
  • Five years’ experience practicing dentistry preferred. Previous experience working with under-served population desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  1. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within dentistry.
  2. Able to work independently, but also within a group, contributing to the efforts of the entire team.
  3. Awareness and appreciation of public health policy issues related to the provision of dental services.
  4. An awareness of and appreciation for both the health and socioeconomic needs of a low-income, underserved population.
  5. Training and experience in the clinical management of a public health dental program is desirable.
  6. Demonstrated capacity for innovative leadership.
  7. Able to effectively manage and direct dental staff support activities while providing quality dental care.
  8. Able to receive detailed information through oral communications; express or exchange ideas by verbal communications.
  9. Excellent written and verbal communications, listening, and social skills.
  10. Able to interact effectively with people of varied educational, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, skill levels and value systems.
  11. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
  12. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provides leadership in the ongoing development of a dental program based upon community need, health behaviors of the population served and the resources of the organization. The dental program will address the philosophy of care, range of services, service priorities and clinical goals and objectives.
  2. Participates in the ongoing development of an operational structure for the dental clinics designed to meet dental program needs.
  3. Oversees the clinical administration of the dental program.
  4. Participates in the development of the annual budget and productivity standards for the dental program.
  5. Supervises and leads monthly rounding meetings with dental providers.
  6. Conducts regular meetings of clinical providers and promotes good communication within the dental staff.
  7. Assumes primary responsibility for the development, outcome measure and management of a dental Quality Assurance Program, which will include oral health standard patient care protocols across sites, a patient care review process, and a system by which problems are addressed and corrected. Management of this program includes ensuring:
  • Protocols are updated regularly to reflect the newest technological developments in the dental field;
  • Staff receive appropriate training to enable them to perform according to established protocols;
  • The patient care review process operates on a regular basis and identifies and corrects problems in a satisfactory and timely manner.
  1. Assures that contracted lab work satisfies clinical standards and provider expectations.
  2. Participates as a member of the management team to establish the direction of the organization, set goals and problem solve as appropriate.
  3. Advocates for Heritage Health and serve as a liaison to, including active membership in, local and state professional societies and key members of the local dental community. Acts in a public relations role whenever professional input is required at, for example, funding agencies, the community at large, Maxillofacial Review Board, etc.
  4. Schedules dental care visits per agreed upon FTE status.
  5. Ability to see 15-20 patients per clinical day.
  6. Performs clinical services such as restorative, surgical, various preventative and restorative services.
  7. Understands and follows infection control procedures.
  8. Reviews medical histories at each visit; consults with primary health care provider as indicated.
  9. Diagnoses dental disease, oral pathology and develops a written treatment plan, prioritizing treatments.
  10. Charts all pathologic conditions and report findings to the patient (caregiver or guardian).
  11. Explains course of treatment to the patient; solicits his/her input and agreement.
  12. Balances treatment plan on patient’s needs and desires and in conjunction with patient and clinic resources.

20. Ensures all prescriptions and advice regarding medications is in accordance with accepted community standards and Heritage Health protocols.

21. Recommends dental equipment changes and additions.

22. Participates in the development and implementation of provider productivity standards.

23. Attends and participate in staff meetings and in-service trainings.

24. Represents Heritage Health at conferences, meetings, and continuing education programs.

25. Participates in precepting dental assisting students, dental hygiene students and dental students as required.

26. Promotes positive interpersonal relationships with fellow employees, providers and patients. Actively supports decision making of the Senior Management team.

27. Ensures confidentiality of patient information.

28. Attends all monthly staff meetings and other meetings as requested.

29. Participates in QA/QI activities.

30. Follows all clinical protocols and procedures as outlined in the Provider Handbook.

31. Partners with CCO and Mental Health/ Behavioral Health Department.

32. Performs other related duties as assigned or indicated.
