Job DescriptionRiverway Clinic has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Medical Lab Technician (MLT), CMA or RMA to float within the Lab Departments between our Andover, Anoka, and Elk River locations This position focuses on excellence toward patient centered care and patient relationships. REPORTS TO: Laboratory/Radiology Supervisor
DIRECTION OF OTHERS: None
Position PurposePerforms blood draws per provider orders. Performs routine testing for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease, in accordance with clinical and governmental standards. Excellence is to be centered on patient care and patient relationships and is the responsibility of all employees.
Position ResponsibilitiesPeople: TeamworkAssists in orientation and training of new personnel as assigned to ensure established procedures are clearly understood and followed. Documents training on the training checklist.
Participates actively in self-development and educational activities.
Handles patient’s questions, concern regarding procedures.
Identifies and works to resolve problems with other departments and individuals in a constructive manner.
Focuses on solving the problem, not blaming.
Effectively shares job knowledge with new employees.

Health: Data and QualityPrepares, analyzes, evaluates and documents patient specimens in various departments within the laboratory.
Communicates results (via telephone, paper or computer) to providers in accordance with laboratory procedures and policies.
Participates in quality improvement activities including: analyzing proficiency testing samples, performs and documents quality control, monitors and distributes results according to established guidelines to ensure accuracy of tests performed in the clinic.
Performs phlebotomy and capillary punctures on patients to obtain samples for testing in accordance to lab policy and procedure.
Performs various clerical duties as assigned such as filing paper orders, result sheets, monthly paperwork (QA).
Prepares test orders and specimens for testing and/or transfer to reference laboratory.
Maintains proper use of standard precautions, protective barriers, use of aseptic technique and disposal of infections/hazardous waste.
Complies with Code of Conduct.
Identifies and responds to issues of confidentiality, performs within legal and ethical boundaries.
Complies with applicable legislation such as OSHA, CLIA and COLA standards.
Experience: Patient ServiceAnswers incoming calls and respond appropriately. Greets patients warmly and instructs on specimen collection procedures.
Recognizes and responds to written, verbal and nonverbal communications in an appropriate and timely manner.
Greets patients with a warm welcome and completes interactions with a warm closure.
Patient Advocacy: Assures patient’s rights to privacy, safety and confidentiality.
Respects, embraces and values diversity.
Stewardship: FinancialMonitors and requests lab supplies to ensure proper inventory and avoid interruption in service.
Performs and documents maintenance, troubleshoots and documents equipment malfunctions, contacts repair service and instructs other employees in proper instrument use to ensure proper functioning of laboratory equipment.
Customer ServicePerforms other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Greet patients with a warm welcome and completes interactions with a warm closure.

Requires normal vision and hearing range, and the absence of color blindness.

QualificationsMedical Lab TechnicianEducation/Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent issued in the United States. Those employees with only foreign educational documents must have them evaluated for equivalency to a US high school diploma, or college degree. (Please contact COLA for a list of evaluation organizations).
  • Training as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
  • One year recent experience in an accredited laboratory preferred.
Medical AssistantJob QualificationsMedical Assistant having completed a medical assistant program; or
CMA with current AAMA certificate; or
RMA With Current AMT CertificateSkills and Abilities:Organizes effectively
Establishes priorities
Understands regulations and procedures to administer patient care
Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care
Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish safe working conditions
Ability to maintain records, write reports and respond to correspondence
Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance
