Volunteer Coordinator

Summary

Volunteers are integral to Hawaii Island Humane Society’s ability to expand and enhance our lifesaving programs. The Volunteer Coordinator is an essential role, helping to develop the volunteer program by recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers who are an asset to Hawaii Island Humane Society’s operations, programs, and mission.

Core Responsibilities

● Oversee and coordinate the activities of HIHS’ volunteer team

● Provide onsite supervision for volunteers

● Set tone and expectation for volunteers; provide clear messaging that establishes channels for communication, activities and engagement, accountability, etc.

● Organize and provide volunteer training, including volunteer introduction and advanced skills development

● Identify opportunities for volunteer recruitment and engage in recruitment activities

● Maintain an organized, welcoming space for volunteers to access supplies, training, etc.

● Ensure new volunteers are provided with t-shirts and information upon their first scheduled day so that they can be set up for success at the onset

● Collaborate with management and leadership to identify needs and design volunteer roles to meet them

● Communicate effectively with volunteers, ensuring they are made aware of updates, news, and needs in a timely way

● Coordinate specific volunteer activities including special projects

● Act as point person for volunteers; receive, respond to, and forward inquiries as appropriate

● Investigate and respond to concerns from or about volunteers

● Foster a collaborative, community approach by providing opportunities for volunteer recognition and thanks, social connection, and broader engagement

● Conduct annual review of volunteer data, verifying that appropriate waivers, applications, and other forms are on file and current

● Maintain accurate volunteer files, removing inactive volunteers and re-engaging where possible

● Produce metrics to demonstrate program impact including volunteer team growth, contribution, retention, and more

● Other duties as assigned by management

Work Environment

Hawaii Island Humane Society is a non-profit animal welfare organization, operating two limited admission shelters on the island of Hawaii. Work is primarily based out of our Animal Community Center in Kona, with travel to The Keaau Shelter on the east side of the island. The Animal Community Center is situated on 12 acres in the idyllic climate of Kona's Holualoa neighborhood. The cool upper elevation breezes, natural rockfaces, and sweeping ocean views create the perfect setting for our state-of-the-art facility. Our campus includes Scruffee's Cat Barn equipped with indoor/outdoor patios as well as individual housing units, three Dog Dormitories, Adoption Square, a multipurpose Education Building, Welcome Center, Administrative offices, and Central Bark Park, comprised of two dog parks for large and small dogs. Our future plans include the development of a Veterinary Hospital, which will allow us to elevate the level of care for both shelter animals and owned pets. This beautiful facility was funded entirely by grants and donations.

Qualifications

Passion for the mission of Hawaii Island Humane Society and an ability to articulate it effectively; strong interpersonal and organizational skills; enjoys interacting with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences; confident giving direction; comfortable managing strong, passionate personalities; highly motivated self-starter who can work independently and on a team; able to train others; demonstrated ability to speak effectively before large groups and communicate effectively both orally and in writing; demonstrates flexibility and is willing to adjust work schedule or flow to meet the needs of the organization. Demonstrates a strong interest in the operations, services, and programs provided by Hawaii Island Humane Society and enjoys working as a member of a collaborative, progressive team.

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required.
  • 2 years or more of volunteer support or management, preferred
  • Experience working with animals or in animal welfare, preferred
  • Experience using Better Impact, preferred

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $16.00 per hour
