Harlem Children's Zone is Hiring a Research Science Associate, Evaluation Near New York, NY

Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) - a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York - seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Research Science Associate to support the Research and Evaluation Department.
The Research Science Associate will bring a passion for the mission of the Harlem Children's Zone: To break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.
The Research Science Associate will help implement and maintain a research agenda that a) supports ongoing integration of evidence-based best practices into HCZ program development and implementation; b) identifies opportunities to innovate in the area of place-based poverty alleviation work; and c) emphasizes the translation of research findings into actionable recommendations that will be accessible to teams across the organization and to external partners.
Working closely with the Director of Research Science and theSenior Research Science Associate, the Research Science Associate is a key member of the department's Research Science team.The Research Science Associate will assist in developing and conducting studies that answer questions central to the ongoing success of HCZ programs.Critically, theAssociate works to ensure that research projects are completed and presented to help program leads, senior HCZ staff, and external funders understand how current interventions are related to key indicators of participant success and highlight opportunities for innovation.
This role is an exciting opportunity for someone with a very strong research background and experience analyzing complex systems to contribute to the continued growth, learning, and success of a frontline organization with comprehensive services.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree or PhD in the Social Sciences (Sociology, Psychology, etc.), Public Health, Public Policy, Research Methods, Statistics, or related subject
  • 2 years of research experience; peer-reviewed publications strongly preferred
Who You Are
  • Experience with Excel, statistical software packages for the social sciences (SPSS, Stata, or R), and online survey platforms (Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey)
  • Substantial content knowledge in the areas of college access and success, poverty alleviation, childhood development, K-12 education, law and public policy, public health, community development, or health equity/health disparities
  • Outstanding analytical ability and advanced statistical knowledge
  • Ability to produce high-quality deliverables on time
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues across the organization with varying degrees of experience.
  • Experience with community building, youth development, or related work preferred
  • Prior experience with youth and adults of diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to infer actionable insights from original and secondary research
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate research effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences
What You'll Do
  • Support the implementation of a mission-based research agenda to provide new insights to program leadership that will enhance the short- and long-term efficacy of interventions.
  • Develop, program, and manage participant surveys using online survey platforms.
  • Conduct basic and advanced quantitative statistical analyses that answer key business questions.
  • Focus on integration of cutting-edge data visualization techniques into reporting on place-based research.
  • Assist in the identification and utilization of the most effective methodologies, instruments, and resources to answer questions critical to successful program implementation.
  • Keep abreast of emerging research that best supports existing work or development of new projects.
  • Draft research reports, newsletters, presentations, and other documents to support research dissemination.
