The Emeritus Registered Nurse (E-RN) is a recent or soon to be retired clinical nurse with an active RN license. This role includes support for tasks while role modeling reliable, safe and high-quality patient care. The E-RN uses accumulated knowledge over the course of a career to provide support to nursing team members in specific areas of strategic priority related to safety, quality, patient satisfaction, nurse education, and team member engagement.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of an Emeritus Registered Nurse at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Provides support to nursing team members in specific areas of strategic priority related to safety, quality, patient satisfaction, and team member engagement, at the directions of and under the supervision of Department Leaders.
  • Requests and assesses assignments with skill and abilities in collaboration with unit Leaders.
  • Accepts various assignments as delegated; examples include, but not limited to:
    • Safety: Round for patient safety, respond to alarms, and monitor patients during off-unit transport
    • Quality: Round for problem-prone quality areas, complete audits/gather data, participate in unit process improvement projects, and assist with Regulatory readiness.
    • Patient Satisfaction: Round proactively for patient needs, respond to patient call bells, support admission, transfers and discharge processes, assist with intravenous preparing/disconnecting/removing, dispensing PRN medication (only as directed or prescribed), assist with ambulation, obtain and record patient vitals, follow up with discharged patients via telephone.
    • Team member engagement: Provide unit level in-services, serve as unit expert such as Dimensions Nurse Champion, cover patient assignment for team member meal breaks, serve as primary or secondary preceptor for new nurses, mentor nurse residents and other nurses on the unit, and participate in/lead unit shared governance activities.
  • Creates and nurtures a safe and non-punitive learning environment for the novice, advanced beginner and staff nurses by mentoring and engaging in developmental activities.
  • Champions the HMH safety, quality and high reliability initiatives and providing evidence of the efficacy of the initiatives in practice.
  • Integrates new knowledge, development of new skills and increases critical thinking capacity of the novice nurse as they advance in the development of clinical practice.
  • The emeritus nurse, in concert with the clinical educator, may provide a variety of appropriate learning experiences to the novice nurse for professional development. This could include learning modules, journal clubs, group learning, etc.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with various nursing and non-nursing departments to meet organizational goals.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

  • Current and valid New Jersey Nursing license is required
  • Active American Heart Association (AHA) BLS/CPR certification is required
  • Minimum of 25 years of recent clinical nursing experience required
  • Minimum of 15 years of Cardiac Rehab experience with patient care and assessments
  • Telemetry certification required
  • National certification in area of specialty required
  • BSN strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in teaching, mentoring and coaching new graduates and novice nurses required
  • Has attended the preceptor training and has served as a preceptor within the last 2 years required
  • Demonstrated expertise in integrating evidence-based research to improve professional practice and care of the patient required
  • The ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing patient needs, a strong sense of accountability for improving the lives of our patients and their caregivers, an exceptional focus on teamwork, dedication to ongoing education and the ability and passion to deliver the highest quality of care based on a strong sense of patient focus are all required.
