Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Homeowner Services, the Homeownership Housing Counselor will be responsible for preparing first-time home buyers for a successful homeownership journey. This includes assessing clients’ ability to qualify for a mortgage, identifying financial obstacles, and developing detailed action plans to successfully navigate clients towards homeownership. Once clients achieve Mortgage-Readiness, Counselor will make referrals to support client’s needs and assist clients in analyzing all available financing and home purchase options. The Counselor will also be responsible for facilitating financial and homebuyer education workshops. This position requires the use of the independent judgement and decision-making skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  1. Manage caseload of housing counseling clients who are interested in becoming first-time homeowners, and counsel them towards mortgage-readiness.
  2. Work with clients in a group and one-on-one basis to deliver Homeownership Education, Financial Education, and Budget/Credit Counseling tailored to each client’s unique circumstance.
  3. Build relationships with lenders, Realtors and other homebuying professionals to develop strong referral networks.
  4. Maintain up to date information on first-time homebuyer assistance products.
  5. Ensure client files are complete, well-maintained and compliant with HUD standards.
  6. Provide resources/knowledge and make referrals to meet clients’ needs.
  7. Provide weekly, monthly and fiscal year end metric reporting to Management.
  8. Comply with all requirements of contracts and agreements, including HUD program requirements and National Industry Standards.
  9. Maintain the Client Management System associated with counseling program.
  10. Conduct and coordinate homebuyer and homeowner education workshops in English and Spanish.
  11. Update marketing collateral necessary to advertise program nt in Microsoft Office Suite

Education and/or Experience Required (Minimum):

  1. Minimum 2 years of experience in nonprofit/housing industry and/or related field
  2. Knowledge of budgeting techniques, credit and credit reporting
  3. Experience working with diverse customer bases.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Salesforce knowledge preferred

Required Licenses (if applicable):

Must hold HUD Housing Counseling Certification or achieve certification within one year of hire

Language Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills required in English.
  • Ability to understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate.
  • Ability to communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
  • Ability to describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

  • Must be willing and able to work some evenings and Saturdays.
  • Must be willing to occasionally travel for business-related trainings and conferences.

Work Environment:

This is a hybrid remote work environment with 2 days working from home and 3 days working in the office and a combination of classroom instruction and workshops.

Physical Activity & Requirements

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to sit and use repetitive motions of the wrists, hands and/or fingers. This is a sedentary position; however, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, grasp, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and lift up to 15pds. Hearing, talking and vision abilities required by this job include perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, expressing or exchanging ideas be means of the spoken word and close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading.
