Executive Director

LaPorte County Habitat for Humanity has a passion and heart for improving our community. We partner with homebuyers to build affordable housing, and with our 0% mortgage provide secure places for those in need of a decent home. We are based in Michigan City, Indiana.

The Executive Director is a mission-driven leader with executive non-profit level experience to work with professional Board and deliver on strategic plans for development. Multi-skilled individual will make a mark impacting the Community. Responsible and accountable for the effective and efficient financial, operational and administrative management of LPCH. Provides leadership in accordance with the policies, objectives and directions of the Board of Directors to promote its overall vision, direction and growth. Networks with community services, bringing together committees, staff and volunteers to carry out the goals and objectives of the mission.

Reports to: Executive Board and Board of Directors

Employee Status: Exempt, a minimum of 40 hours per week

Planning and Strategy
• Plan and develop the objectives of the organization in accordance with Board directives and mission
• Recommend appropriate Board action to help set goals and develop strategic plans
• Evaluate with Board policy changes and updates for evaluation and implementation
• With Board Chair, sets agenda for Board meetings and supports the activities of all Board committees

Finance
• Responsible for the financial, operational and administrative performance of the affiliate
• Recommend annual budget for Board approval and prudently manages the affiliate’s resources within budget, revising plans and budgets as appropriate
• Review financial statements and staff payroll to determine progress and budget status
• Works closely with the Finance Committee and/or Treasurer to administer fiscal control, accountability, budget reporting expenditures
• Approve all operational and construction expenditures
• Liaise with our mortgage servicers to review portfolio and recommend action for existing mortgage holders and their repayment status

Communication and Outreach
• Ensure positive communications and relations with constituents and staff
• Speak in public on behalf of LPCH and is comfortable in civic, faith-based and corporate settings
• Foster and maintain effective working relationships with the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, the public, local City government, and community service agencies

Grants and Fundraising
• Develop and coordinate financial programs to provide funding for new or continuing operations and fundraising efforts

• Serve as the principal liaison to foundations, corporations and faith groups.
• Develop resources, researches funding sources and writes proposals to a variety of organizations
• Work with the Development Committee to build positive visibility of the affiliate, and generate funds for its operation
• Oversee and report on grant income, awards and donations through our donor portal with accurate record keeping

Staff Supervision
• Monitor staff and staff performance
• Work with Construction Manager to supervise site construction and insure appropriate onsite training and safety for volunteers is in place and implemented
• Support Family Services and Family Support for effective recruitment, processing, selection and care of partner families
• Supervise Volunteer Coordinator to develop and implement strategies for increasing communication, volunteer activity and financial support from local church congregations and other faith-based groups

General Admin
• Administer and manage daily office activity with regular onsite visits to monitor operations.

Mission
• Committed advocate for the LPHFH mission
• Willing to understand the LPHFH ministry and know that the role of the Executive Director is only a part of the larger goal

Skills and Experience

Required
o Strong financial and management skills
o Demonstrated leadership abilities and organizational skills, with a long-term vision and proven leadership
o Knowledge of fundraising principles, processes and the ability to develop working relationships with potential funding sources
o Effective verbal, interpersonal communication skills and competent public speaker able to communicate LPHFHs program and mission clearly and persuasively
o Ability to write effectively and succinctly and to synthesize complex and/or diverse information.
o Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, analyze information and effectively lead, using sound and accurate judgment.
o Participate in group work, be a good listener and the ability to engage in well-considered discussions.
o Have good anticipatory abilities and personally act on same as need arises

Preferred knowledge of:
o Mortgage processes and functions
o House construction
o Microsoft office - at minimum high-level skills with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
o Donor reporting through Bonterra (Network for Good)
o Some experience working with social media sites and web platforms (WordPress or like)

Qualification and training
o Bachelor’s degree in either non-profit management or business with some public relations and/or marketing experience.
o Must have two years paid experience worked in non-profit or voluntary sector related organization, nonprofit administration related field or equivalent work experience.
o A connection to the community through volunteering or mentoring

Hours and Compensation
40-hour pw
Salaried position
In-office. Some local travel and additional evening and weekends required.

Salary
Commensurate with experience and education.
