TITLE: School Bus Driver - Athletics and Field Trips

DEPARTMENT: Facilities

REPORTS TO: Director of Support Operations

POSITION OBJECTIVE: The major responsibility of the school bus driver is to transport students to athletic events after school and on the weekends (10-20 Hours Per Week).

QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS: The employee is a Christian with an authentic and mature personal relationship with Jesus Christ in both their professional and personal life with a calling and commitment to Christian education. Must be able to work independently, deal with frequent interruptions, and nurture and maintain a positive relationship with parents, students and staff.  Please review our Statement of Faith Agreement.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Must hold a High School diploma or GED, Class B Commercial Driver's License, an Indiana State School Bus Committee Standard Certificate (yellow card), pass DOT physical assessments, clean driving record, and have a minimum of one year experience as a bus driver.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have a clear understanding of transportation safety
  • Ability to perceive, visualize, and accurately judge physical position
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Ability to reason and problem solve
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible in daily routine along with different age students
  • Must be able to operate two-way radio, computer, general office supplies and equipment
  • Flexibility to transport passengers that can fluctuate Monday-Saturday (10-20 Hours Per Week)

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides safety and overall well being while transporting passengers on the school bus
  • Ensures safe operations and follows all laws, procedures, and regulations governing school transportation
  • Communicates rules and responsibilities to passengers
  • Drives for all athletic events and communicates any schedule updates to Transportation Coordinator 
  • Reports in a timely manner for scheduled events, allowing sufficient time to perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections
  • Recognizes and reports mechanical or maintenance concerns

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Indoors 80% of the time; must be able to remain stationary for long periods of time while operating bus and must be able to move up to 50 pounds. Must be able to meet physical requirements of the position, which require steering, firmly applying brake in an emergency situation, bending, lifting, stooping, moving through the rearmost emergency exit, and carrying objects. Must be able to walk, stand, and climb ladders. Must be able to traverse campus, which includes paved areas, baseball fields, and grassy areas. Must be able to use computer and other audio-visual equipment. Must be able to ascend and descend stairs. Must be able to communicate with others. Specific vision abilities required in this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to discern low volume sounds and odors. Must be able to assist children for health and safety reasons.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Exposure to the elements when crossing campus. Change in temperature/humidity; potential for excessive noise, using computer/monitor screen; may work alone, around or with others. Exposure to the elements is to be expected while assisting with event preparation and management responsibilities.
