Position Summary
This position is 11 months per year (mid-August through mid-September OFF)
5% King County Premium Pay will be added to the salary placement
Green River College is looking for an Instructional Lab Technician who is able to coordinate technical support services required by the instructor for beginning, intermediate, and advanced college ceramics classes. Provide support for all ceramic program activities, including lab preparations, equipment maintenance, and demonstrations related to instruction. Provide technical support to students about the processes involved in the hand-building, wheel-throwing, glazing, and firing of clay.

Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical, 15% Adult Basic Education, 3% Applied Bachelor degrees. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. Position Responsibilities

  • Assist the ceramics instructor with lecture and lab materials. Confer with the ceramic's instructor regarding assignments and preparations.
  • Prepare teaching materials and equipment for use in class demonstrations.
  • Fire electric and gas kilns as needed to complete course work.
  • Instructional and technical support for students.
  • Demonstrate competence with electric, air, and hand tools necessary to maintain studio equipment and operations.
  • Maintain and/or repair ceramic studio equipment to be in proper working order with an emphasis on safety.
  • Organize, and maintain ceramic storeroom and inventory all chemicals and equipment on a continual basis. Update MSDS files, and coordinate hazmat procedures in compliance with state regulations.
  • Work with the Building Manager related to program needs.
  • Serve as the primary contact with facilities department for building and equipment issues in our area with electrical, plumbing, and ventilation.
  • Order and maintain equipment and supplies inventory as needed or requested by faculty.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment in all ceramic related areas.
  • Supervise and train the safe use and handling of all hazardous materials.
  • Able lift 50lbs of clay or glaze materials and know how and when to use a dolly when appropriate.
  • Formulate and test clay, glazes, stains, and slips to be used in the ceramics program.
  • Organize work study and work grant students with the instructor.
  • Coordinate studio monitors and volunteers in coordination with the instructor.
  • Photograph student work for archival, outreach, and outreach purposes.
  • To perform related duties as required by the instructor.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate in Fine Arts:
    • AFA/AA or higher degree with significant study in Ceramics, or at least two years of college course work in Ceramics (no degree), or significant role as an apprentice or mentorship with an established professional Potter/Ceramicist, and experience working as a Studio Potter.
  • Must be actively working toward a career in the ceramic arts with an active exhibition/show/competition record.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge of kilns, both gas and electric.
  • Basic operational knowledge of kilns, both gas and electric.
  • Basic knowledge of ceramic materials related to clay, glaze, and related products.
  • Basic knowledge of ceramic studio operations.
  • Working knowledge of basic computer functions: Outlook, Microsoft, Adobe Acrobat, etc...
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Competence in operating, maintaining, and repairing electric and gas fired kilns.
  • Experience in high, mid, and low temperature firing.
  • Experience in alternative firing; pit-firing, horsehair, obvara, and raku.
  • Experience operating clay mixer and pug-mill.
  • Competence in operating power equipment, basic carpentry, and masonry tools.
  • Basic electrical knowledge used in repairing electric kilns: plugs, elements, and relays.
  • Ability to load and unload multiple kilns independently and in small groups.
  • Ability to maintain order and a clean working environment.
  • Competent in the proper handling and processing of hazardous materials and waste- and the related paperwork.
  • Ability to work well with others, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a diverse cultural environment and enjoy working with students of all ages and walks of life.
Supplemental Information

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Must have the ability to sit for prolonged period of time at a desk/computer workstation.
  • Frequent repetitive arm, hand, and finger motions.
  • Frequent use of computer and exposure to terminal screen in performing work assignments.
  • Work in an office setting with frequent interruptions.
  • Must be able to maintain "regular and predictable attendance".
  • Dusty work conditions.
  • May need to carry, lift or move equipment/supplies up to 50 lbs (wet or dry ceramic materials).
  • Lots of bending, lifting and time on your feet - work shoes are required.
  • Work conditions may vary from very cold (in winter) to very hot (in summer).
  • Must be comfortable working with equipment associated with a college ceramics program - competent in handling ceramic ware at all stages of the process.
  • Willing to work/fire to meet course deadlines.
  • Knowledge of emergency protocols, evacuation procedures, use of fire extinguishers, and basic first aid.
  • Work schedule: 8 hours/day, five days a week.
  • Term of Position: Cyclic: 11 months
