Job Summary
FLSA Status: Weekly Rate/Seasonal Position
Starting Salary : $500 per week, plus room and board
Employment Dates: May 20 through June 28, 2024
Location: Camp Frias Frontier, Alamo, NV. Weekly transportation to/from Las Vegas and Alamo is provided.
The Kitchen Assistant is responsible to organize and prepare pack-outs; to help with general kitchen duties as needed; to operate the dishwasher and facilitate meal cleanup. This role also requires interaction with girls, adults and staff and this is to be friendly and professional. When not assigned to the kitchen the assistant might be asked to help with a group of girls. The kitchen assistant needs to be flexible. Girl Scout curriculum and corresponding training provided. Summer camp begins May 28 through June 28, 2024.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may need to be assigned per the needs of your council and areas of supervision.
Before Camp:
  1. Complete online training videos and quizzes
  2. Become familiar with the Employee Manual
  3. Become familiar with COVID-19 safety protocols and workplace guidelines
  4. Become familiar with kitchen operations
  5. Assist Head Cook in kitchen set up and storage areas for food service
During Camp:
  1. Sees that enough tables and chairs are set up for each meal
  2. Oversees hoppers setting tables before each meal
  3. Oversees clean-up activities after each meal
  4. Assist in limited meal preparation, meal serving and meal clean-up
  5. Operates dishwasher
  6. Organizes, prepares and disassembles pack-outs (food) for unit cookouts, storing food and supplies properly
  7. Works with Head Cook to ensure that food handling, storage and preparation areas meet state health regulations
  8. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior
  9. Maintains an orderly and clean dining hall at all times (including daily sweeping and mopping of dining hall floor, weekly chairs, benches, and tables
  10. Fill the water coolers with drinking water for the campers each morning and as needed
  11. Make sure hand wash stations are full of water for camper before and after meals
  12. Attends all staff meetings
  13. Other duties as assigned by the Head Cook/Camp Director
Post Camp:
  1. Assist in the inventory of dining hall and kitchen equipment, supplies and food
  2. Works with the Head Cook to ensure that kitchen, pack-out area and all equipment is cleaned thoroughly
  3. Other work as assigned by the Head Cook/Camp Director
Qualifications
  • Minimum 18 years of age with High School Diploma or GED.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain such certifications
  • Current Food Handler Safety Training Card (GSSNV will reimburse cost)
  • Previous experience or training in food preparation
  • Prior camping experience and working with youth
  • Knowledge of the Girl Scout program is a plus
  • Excellent, effective English language abilities, both oral and written. Bilingual in Spanish a plus.
  • Patience, enthusiasm and good humor
  • Is very interested in providing a fun, safe, camping experience
  • Demonstrate a commitment and ability to interact with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work under supervision and take responsibility when delegated
  • Ability to take initiative in performing tasks without close supervision
  • Ability to read and follow the directions of a recipe
  • Ability to understand allergies and accommodate
  • Ability to understand that we have a no nut policy at camp and implement this in meals
  • Knows about the safe use and storage of cleaning chemicals in food preparation areas
  • Ability to relate and interact with all age levels and adults in a positive manner
  • Ability to work with staff, campers and vendors
  • Ability to stand, walk, and sit upright for extended periods of time
  • Ability to talk and hear
  • Ability to reach with hands and arms, and use hands to finger, handle, and feel
  • Ability to occasionally climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Willingness to live and sleep in camp setting approximately 6 weeks during the camp season up to 3,500 feet altitude.
  • Girl Scouts of U.S.A. membership is required upon hire
  • COVID-19 vaccination is strongly recommended
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This job functions primarily out of Frias Frontier, located in Alamo, Lincoln County, which is up to 68-acre property at 3,449 plus feet elevation. Frias Frontier is subject to extreme temperature, snow and wind.
