Context and Philosophy
Friends School of Baltimore has an opening for a full-time Learning Specialist/Instructional Coach beginning in August 2024 . The position is a 10.5 month position requiring a proactive approach to supporting families and students with consistent communication and feedback. This position will collaborate with two guidance counselors and two learning specialists in PK-8, as well as teachers in grades PK-5.
Responsibilities :
  • Support staff by providing instructional coaching in the areas of culturally responsive teaching, inclusive curriculum and instructional materials, and in differentiated instruction utilizing mind/brain/education pedagogies.
  • Advocate for students with complex learning profiles in the Lower School.
  • Facilitate daily pull-out and push-in groups with students who need additional intervention in reading and math.
  • Support staff with professional development to ensure all students are properly accommodated, according to their accommodation plans and to further their knowledge of serving students with executive function or other learning-related challenges.
  • Maintain communication with families of students with accommodations or other learning-related challenges.
  • Refer families to tutors or other learning supports, as needed.
  • Attend all grade-level team meetings and participate in Student Support Team meetings.
  • Review all formal testing (ex: OT, psycho-educational evaluations) & manage a caseload of students who have accommodation plans.
  • Provide teachers with Individual Student Profiles, which includes test report summaries with strengths and weaknesses, as well as classroom and testing accommodations.
  • Administer individual student assessments.
  • Maintain a current list of educational evaluators, and keep them current on Friends School policies and support services.
  • Serve on the Admissions Committee.
  • Teach workshops to students on topics related to organization, learning differences, or related to the Learning Specialist's expertise.
  • Run or co-facilitate at least two parent education sessions per year in the evenings.
  • Perform supervisory and duties as needed in the Lower School (i.e. carline, study period, lunch duty, etc.)
  • Commit to professional learning on culturally responsive teaching, mind/brain/education pedagogies, restorative practices, and racial justice training.
  • Fully participate in the life of the Lower School.
Qualifications :
  • Required : Bachelor's degree; Experience reading psychological educational and neuropsychological assessments in order to create learning profiles also required
  • Preferred : Master's degree and a minimum of two-five years experience preferred as well as.
  • Candidates should demonstrate a willingness to understand and incorporate Quaker Principles and Quaker education into their work.
