Franklin County is Hiring a Permit Technician Near Louisburg, NC

An employee is this class provides support in the permit approval processes for numerous permit types including, but not limited to, commercial, residential, and single trades (i.e., Building, Electrical, Plumbing & Mechanical) within the Planning and Inspections Department. An employee in this position receives, processes and issues building permits, zoning permits and other administrative approvals as authorized; schedules and tracks building and zoning inspections; maintains accurate and complete permit files and serves as a resource and provides information on County permitting procedures to property owners, residents, businesses, the general public, and other County departments. Employees in this position must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to multi-task in order to provide exceptional customer service. Work is performed under the supervision of the Department head or other higher-level supervisor for the Inspections Department and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and the quality and effectiveness of work completed.General and working knowledge of office practices and procedures.
General and working knowledge and ability to use correct numbers, arithmetic, bookkeeping, grammar, vocabulary, and spelling.
Knowledge of pertinent codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations pertaining to building code, fire code, and related areas.
Knowledge of procedures involved in the issuance of building permits, zoning permits and other administrative approvals.
Ability to independently perform a full range of permit processing, inspection scheduling and file keeping duties.
Ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
Ability to gather and give basic information and instructions on departmental programs based on inquiries.
Ability to learn a general knowledge of persons and departmental programs.
Ability to be tactful and courteous.
Ability to gather and compile materials from a variety of sources.
Ability to operate a variety of office machines such as a computer, fax, copier, and others required in the position.
Ability to use judgment in organizing and establishing priorities of the work assigned.
Ability to record financial transactions and balance figures; ability to meet deadlines with payrolls and related actions with strict timelines.
Ability to compile information based on general instructions.
Ability to arrange and place records, reports, and files into a proper sequence.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, and the general public.
High school diploma and two years of experience in general administrative support work involving frequent contact with the public, preferably in the building trades or construction industries; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of the construction field and issuance of building permits is desirable.
