The primary responsibility of the Communications Coordinator is to maintain the efficient operation of the communications center and the operators on duty. Participates in planning of programs, policies or objectives for own work group and department.

Responsibilities:
  • Plans, manages, and reviews the work of assigned Emergency Communications staff through subordinate supervision to include TCIC/NCIC work including entries, modifications, cancellations and clearing of work as needed on warrants, articles, vehicles, etc
  • Serves as liaison and effectively represents the Sheriff's Office Emergency Communications division in contacts with the public, Law Enforcement, Fire and EMS personnel. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
  • Evaluates performance and provides staff discipline and coaching as required.
  • Provides training to staff in work procedures. Responsible for the annual evaluations of shift personnel.
  • Responsible for doing quality control and quality improvement for the shift assigned to them by the communications manager; Responsible for equipment maintenance.
  • Ensuring that all work is completed; Help with decision-making.
  • Responsible for scheduling personnel and ensuring that each shift is adequately staffed.
  • Provides input to improve office procedures and implements such procedures upon adoption.
  • Ensures radio and call taking operations are conducted in compliance with agency and Federal Communications policies and procedures.
  • Answering, entering and dispatching Law Enforcement, Fire and EMS calls for service including TDD/TTY; Provide courtesy and servitude to the public; Provide medical pre arrival instructions to the public.
  • Operates numerous highly technical computer systems including the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD); enter and retrieves information to and from various databases including TCIC/NCIC, Fort Bend County computer systems, and a variety of local, regional, and state emergency response databases.
  • Contacting wreckers, Animal Control, Justice of the Peace, and other on call employees when needed; Responsible for handling time sensitive audio recording requests by law enforcement personnel.
  • Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.
  • Possess and maintain a cooperative and positive attitude.
  • Required to occasionally work overtime.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Must possess an Intermediate TCOLE Telecommunication Certificate.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at date of hire.
  • Must possess a Texas Driver's License; Good driving records.
  • Must be of good moral character.
  • A minimum of 5 years or more working as an emergency dispatcher. Progressively responsible roles in leadership, training or supervision within a 9-1-1 communications center a plus.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others; management, organizational, and supervisory skills; Ability to complete assigned tasks within tight deadlines; Ability to prioritize own/others' work.
  • Must have the knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, and office processes, to include being highly proficient with computer hardware and various software programs.
  • Strong computer and typing skills (35 WPM), working knowledge of spreadsheets, word processing, database; Verbal and written communication skills; Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation to include an oral review board interview, psychological exam, polygraph and drug test.
  • Requires one or more of the following: prolonged sitting, standing, walking.
  • Specific vision required by the position includes up close and distance.

SALARY RANGE: $ 29.50 hourly
