RN ER Nights, travel contract for Antelope Valley Medical Center.
Job Objective:
An Emergency Department Registered Nurse must be knowledgeable in multiple disciplines, pediatrics, obstetrics, medicine, cardiology, trauma, orthopedics, oncology, infectious disease, and psychiatry. He/she must be knowledgeable in caring for all age groups; newborns, infants, toddlers, childhood, adolescence, adult and geriatric.
Essential Duties for all RNs in the Emergency Department:
  • Meets all the essential duties of a Registered Nurse.
  • Nursing Process
  • a. Applies nursing process in direct patient care.
  • b. Skillfully practices triage of patients per Triage Policy
  • c. Assesses patients and documents on the ED nursing T-system a minimum of every two hours or more often when necessary.
  • d. Appropriately intervenes when assessment reveals an abnormal finding, examples include but are not limited to airway, breathing, circulation.
  • e. Knowledgeable regarding pre-hospital forms.
  • Nursing Care Delivery Process
  • a. Knowledgeable regarding current emergency nursing practices and procedures.
  • b. Knowledgeable of the legal aspects of emergency nursing care, including but not limited to:
    • 1) Treatment and/or release of minor to someone other than parent.
    • 2) EMTALA laws in regards to medical screening exams and transfer procedures.
    • 3) Procedure for medical/legal examination and collection of evidence.
    • 4) Procedure for obtaining legal blood alcohol specimen.
    • 5) Requirements for reporting suspected elder/dependent adult and child abuse/neglect.
  • c. Coroners report
  • d. After-care instructions
  • Technical Equipment
  • a. Chest tubes, drainage system, and auto-transfuser.
  • b. Cardio-Respiratory monitors
  • c. Monitoring equipment; Arterial Lines, CVP, Swanz Ganz, ICP.
  • d. Invasive and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring.
  • e. Crash cart/defibrillator (external and internal), ambu bag.
  • f. Oxygen saturation/pulse oximetry
  • g. Fluid warmer
  • h. 12 lead ECG
  • i. Pacemaker, internal and external
  • j. Competent operation of ReddiNet communication System

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:
  • Current California Registered Nursing license
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Certification, initial certification required at first available hospital training class. Annual recertification required
  • Annual Restraint Certification/Recertification
  • Annual JCAHO Review/Competencies

  • Physicians Statement Within 12 months
  • Drug Screen Within 30 days prior to assignment start date.
  • Proof of TB Test Skin Test: Within 12 months prior to assignment start date.
  • Chest X-Ray: Proof of Positive TB w/ Chest X- ray and questionnaire
  • T-Spot/TB Gold: Within 12 months prior to assignment start date.
  • T-dap Vaccine Administered within 10 years of assignment start date.
  • MMR (Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella) Titer must show proof of immunity. If titer is negative, booster is required and titer must be repeated 6 months after administration.
  • Varicella Titer must show proof of immunity. If titer is negative, booster is required and titer must be repeated 6 months after administration.
  • Hepatitis B Titer must show proof of immunity. If titer is negative, booster is required and titer must be repeated 6 months after administration.
  • Mask Fit Test Within 12 months.
  • Ishihara Test (Color-blindness) Record of it.
