Position Description and Qualifications
Job Posting Summary:
Ensworth School seeks an experienced Theater Arts educator to join its middle school arts faculty to teach theater classes (acting, drama, musical theater) and direct the MS Fall Musical and the MS Spring Play. The ideal applicant will be a talented educator with three or more years of teaching experience and a demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with students and colleagues. Prior experience teaching Theater Arts Curriculum - Acting, Drama, and Musical Theater-related Courses is desired. The ability to work as part of the performing arts team member in support of events and a variety of programming is necessary. The MS Theater Arts Teacher will also help provide Technical Theater assistance to all arts programming and is responsible for supervising and maintaining Red Gables Props and Costumes inventory and spaces. Above all, the successful applicant will have demonstrated a commitment to the principles expressed in the Ensworth Vision Statement, executing their role with moral integrity, intellectual vitality, discipline, compassion, humor, and joy.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  • Abides by Ensworth's Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct
  • Commits to the ideals expressed in Ensworth's Mission Statement, Vision Statement, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement
  • Teaches Theater Arts Curriculum - Acting, Drama, Musical Theater related Courses. May teach General Music courses as well.
  • Provide Technical Theater (lighting, sound, stage management) support and assistance to all arts, specials, and interdisciplinary programming in First Hall
  • Works collaboratively with the Tech Office in the support of events and infrastructure of Frist Hall and other Arts performance spaces on the Red Gables Campus.
  • Responsible for supervising and maintaining Red Gables Props and Costumes inventory and spaces.
  • Directs the MS Spring Play and the MS Fall Musical
  • Reports Directly to the RG Arts Chairs and K-12 Arts Director
  • Instructs using a wide variety of traditional and contemporary styles and pedagogy
  • Capable of Set Design and Creation, potentially being able to use a workshop for building sets.
  • Is student-centric and uses performance opportunities as an educational experience to nurture and provide growth, cultivating a positive learning environment and mindset for all students.
  • Integrates technology to support curricular aims and help students effectively achieve their goals
  • As a Performing Arts Team Member, helps support equipment setup and breakdown for all performances, concerts, and events
  • Works as a collaborative and supportive team member of the Performing Arts Team and Tech Crew bringing positive energy and a strong "roll up your sleeves" work ethic to productions and events.
  • Provides continual assessment of student progress and communicates academic performance with the support of the Red Gables Arts Chair.
  • Provides student support and supervision of Frist Hall and Red Gables Campus both inside and outside the classroom
  • Potentially Works as part of the LS Summer Musical Team
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications/Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Theater Education, Theater, Musical Theater, Acting; Master's Degree preferred
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of acting/drama/theater experience in a classroom setting
  • Must be a highly skilled artist with a presentable portfolio of work and a demonstrated record of working with students in an educational environment
  • Advanced understanding and ability to use computers and technology including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, basic office equipment, music software such as QLab, Lighting Systems, and basic live event audio engineering
  • Well-developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with all constituents in a school environment, including students, co-workers, parents, alumni, volunteers, and the public
  • Possesses a positive team mentality with excellent problem-solving, multi-tasking, and organization skills
  • Professional and efficient in their ability to work independently while also able to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external partners
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously with differing deadlines
  • A high degree of accuracy and superior attention to detail
  • Must successfully complete background screening and verification
  • Continued Education Programs (as required by Grade Level and/or position) - Periodically participate in different training sessions identified by you, the employee and/or Divisional Leadership/Supervisor with the goal of keeping our teachers and staff up to date with current teaching methods, practices and any new knowledge in their respective field. Dependent on the program, such training may need to take place outside of normal working hours and/or in the summer months.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
  • Regularly works in standard performing arts theater, office, and classroom conditions
  • Works at a computer screen for extended periods of time; ability to observe students from various distances
  • Frequently required to move around the theater/office/classroom; works at a desk for extended periods of time; occasionally moves around campus and arts facility
  • Ability to occasionally move items weighing up to 50 lbs. across the gallery, theater, and arts classrooms
  • Occasionally works in a stressful performance environment, effectively dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts; stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions
  • Ensworth requires employees to be physically present on campus, with limited exceptions that are at the sole discretion of the School. Under extraordinary circumstances, some or all of the workforce may be required to move to a remote working environment. Additionally, certain individuals may also be approved for limited remote work, based on the nature of the job description, specific circumstances, and only with written prior approval by a direct supervisor.
