Description:

The Division of Animal Resources, within the Emory National Primate Research Center at Emory University, is currently seeking an Animal Care Associate Operations Manager to join our team at our Lawrenceville GA facility. Our work consists of overseeing the daily operations of a large, open campus, nonhuman primate breeding and research facility. The facility operates around the clock providing animal care and support services as well as maintaining overall facility safety and security.

The ideal candidate will be an organized, motivated, detail-oriented, and a professional leader. Other crucial characteristics include reliability, dependability, and accountability. In addition, candidates will need to demonstrate a positive attitude and passion for research. The Associate Operations Manager will collaborate with other units at the Field Station, the Emory Primate Center, and Emory University. They will work to promote an optimistic, harmonious, and efficient workplace culture which embraces diversity.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Under general direction assists the operations manager in managing a comprehensive animal care program that maintains proper housing, sanitation, nourishment, environmental conditions and humane handling for a large and diverse population of laboratory animals.
  • Participates in the recruiting, hiring and orientation of new employees.
  • Leads, supports and evaluates managerial and supervisory staff.
  • Supervises animal care staff directly or indirectly as appropriate.
  • Trains animal care staff on standard operating procedures and coordinates or conducts continuing education and technical development activities.
  • Participates in the managing and directing of facility maintenance and services to ensure efficient operation in compliance with federal and organizational regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree and six years of related experience which includes four years of laboratory animal care experience and three years of supervisor or training experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • AALAS certification LATG and/or CMAR. Completion of the ILAM Program.
  • Experience leading a diverse workforce.
  • Experience in a research laboratory animal facility setting.
  • Previous experience with NHPs would be helpful.
  • Familiarization with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Familiarization with finances, budgets, and inventory control.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer skills, Word, Excel, Power Point.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work environment involves working with biohazardous materials such as NHP blood and tissues.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions including wearing specialized PPE (safety shoes, protective gloves and sleeves, mask/respirator, eye protection for example).
  • Requires the ability to bend, kneel, and/or squat. In addition, there will be considerable walking and climbing stairs.
  • Outdoor work environment, potential exposure to weather elements, pollen, and insects for example.
  • Working with nonhuman primates and chimpanzees.
  • General Work Schedule will be Monday through Friday 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM with departmental expectations of working as needed for emergencies, short-staffed, weekends, and holidays.
