Job Summary

The Getty Foundation fulfills the philanthropic mission of Getty by supporting individuals and institutions committed to advancing the greater understanding and preservation of the visual arts in Los Angeles and throughout the world. Through strategic grant initiatives, the Foundation strengthens art history as a global discipline, promotes the interdisciplinary practice of conservation, increases access to museum and archival collections, and develops current and future leaders in the visual arts. All Program Officers have primary responsibility for developing and managing strategic grant initiatives that advance the mission of Getty and the Foundation. In this role, the focus is initiatives that strengthen art conservation practice of movable and immovable cultural heritage domestically and internationally.

We are looking for a dynamic professional who will lead strategic grant initiatives in the field of art conservation and cultural heritage preservation around the world. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, recognized for their expertise, and has deep knowledge of the field. Flexibility, integrity, tact, and intellectual curiosity will be important assets as this position is expected to work across disciplines and diverse cultures in the fields we serve.

This position may be filled at the Program Officer or Senior Program Officer level, based on experience and qualifications of the selected candidate. The targeted hiring salary range for Program Officer position is $93,149 - $123,421 and the targeted hiring range for the Senior Program Officer position is $129,724 - $171,892.

Major Job Responsibilities

    Identifies needs in the conservation field in consultation with experts from within and outside of Getty.
  • Develops, implements, manages, and evaluates grant initiatives. May also conceive new strategic initiatives.
  • Works with potential grantees to prepare proposals, oversees review and award processes, and monitors the progress and impact of awarded grants.
  • Maintains and expands a large professional network with local, national, and international experts, as well as extensive contact with professional organizations active in art conservation, heritage preservation, and related areas.
  • Participates in and/or acts as a key contributor to the development of Foundation grantmaking policies, long-range organizational planning, and strategic direction.
  • May participate, develop or lead initiative-related convenings.
  • Represents Getty and Foundation's work at professional convenings, conferences, and site visits internationally.
  • Supervises a small program support team, monitors work assignments, mentors, coaches, and evaluates employees' work performance and may guide their professional growth.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in conservation or related field
  • Recognized for expertise in the field and ability to apply extensive knowledge and content specialization.
  • Position requires excellent analytical, organizational, and managerial skills, as well as outstanding interpersonal skills to work effectively with a wide range of applicants, grantees, outside advisors, and other experts.
  • Grantmaking experience preferred but not required.

Program Officer

  • A minimum of 7-10 years of experience in museum art conservation, built heritage preservation, archaeological site conservation, or related field.

Senior Program Officer

  • 10 years of experience in museum art conservation, built heritage preservation, archaeological site conservation, or related field

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Budget management for $3M annually in conservation grants and related operational expenses.
  • Superior listening and observation skills and high-level capacity to distill complex information and ideas into succinct summaries.
  • Strong ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with a wide range of national and international applicants, grantees, outside advisors, and other experts.
  • Broad content knowledge of traditions and trends in the fields associated with grant initiatives of the Foundation, in particular, the conservation of movable and immovable cultural heritage.
  • Serves area of expertise as a recognized thought leader as evidenced through publications, projects, and speaking engagements. Ability to apply extensive knowledge and content expertise to the fields Getty serves.
  • Demonstrates an established reputation for knowledge and expertise in the fields in which Getty is active.
  • May be expected to develop and maintain a network of peers in the field of cultural heritage philanthropy.
  • Due to the international aspects of this role, while it is not required, fluency in at least one foreign language is preferred.
  • Must be available for national and international travel.
