JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Director of Surgical Services, the Surgical Scrub Nurse will prepare the room for patients, obtain necessary supplies, and set up the room in a manner conducive to perform each surgical case. The surgical scrub nurse will be utilized in the role of an Operating Room scrub nurse OR an Operating room circulating nurse, dependent upon the department needs. In the Scrub Nurse role, it is expected that you open a sterile field and set up a sterile table with the appropriate instruments for the assigned case and proficiently provide surgical instruments to the surgical team during the case. The Operating Room Circulator role will include planning and supervising the nursing care administered to meet patient care needs in surgery and providing physicians with optimal services in their surgical cases. The Operating Room Nurse delivers perioperative care to surgical patients through the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation in accordance with TJC, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies, and procedures. Communication with medical staff, other departments, and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality is required. Position requires self-motivation, creativity, and capabilities to function in a semi-autonomous role within a fast pace and dynamic environment.
STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE
1. Conducts surgical scrubs and goes into the surgery room with surgical patients and doctors.
2. Sets up operating room for the patient, ensure all the tools are sterile and ready to go, hand tools to the doctor during the surgery, and perform other duties inside the surgical room as required or instructed b surgeon.
3. Communicates with doctor during the surgical procedure to ensure successful operation.
4. Wash hands and arms with surgical soap before and after surgical procedures.
5. Prepares the patient before being transferred to the recovery unit of the OR.
6. Gathers all equipment and supplies for surgical procedures.
7. Restocks all supplies once they are used on periodic basis.
8. Follows any instruction laid down by the charge nurse.
9. Monitors surgery inventory and also notify the appropriate authorities when there is need for resupply.
10. Supports the surgical team during procedures.
11. Creates and maintain positive, personal, and warm atmosphere around the patient and their family.
12. Collaborates with the surgical team and promote teamwork to ensure patient safety.
13. Recognize respiratory and cardiovascular decline and know initial steps to obtain help and to stabilize your patient.
14. Cares for patients with regards to their individual medical data, such as previous surgical procedure undertaken, age level, and health status.
15. Documents procedures concisely, completely, and in in accordance with JCAHO, federal and state, organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
16. make sure the equipment is ready to go, updates family members on the surgery status during the operation.
17. Remain ready and anticipates plan of action for potential complications should there be a need for lifesaving measures.
18. Periodically remain on-call to take part in emergency surgery
19. Continuously assess patients, plans patient care, provides direct and indirect patient care.
20. Instructs patient and/or family members on patient care.
21. Administer medications, blood, blood products, moderate sedation, assists with anesthesia.
22. Prepares patients for surgery, clipping, prepping, positioning them, etc.
23. Sets up and maintains the sterile field utilizing proper sterile technique opening & setting up.
24. Participates in Universal Protocol, verifying patient, procedure, and site.
25. Administers treatments, wound care, and dressings.
26. Cleans, maintains, or schedules for maintenance, surgical suite and recovery equipment, and associated equipment such as autoclaves, electrocautery units, tourniquets, positioning equipment.
27. Reports equipment and supplies needs to the Charge Nurse and Director of Surgical Services.
28. Reports needed maintenance/hazardous conditions to Charge Nurse, Director of Surgical Services, and Maintenance and makes an entry into the maintenance log.
29. Ensures departmental adherence to proper infection control, OSHA, and safety standards.
30. Responsible for maintaining organizational facilities in accordance with TJC, federal and state, organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
31. Posts cases, putting necessary information in posting book and computer, notifies anesthesia of cases.
32. Gives complete report when relinquishing care to another area.
33. Sets up sterile trays and packages for autoclaving, keeping accurate records of autoclave usage and recommended biological testing.
34. Operates Steris machine, keeping accurate records of Steris usage and weekly biological testing.
35. Other duties as assigned or necessary.
Requirements
Minimum Level of Education : Education level equivalent to completion high school, and a graduate of an accredited registered nursing program.
Formal Training:
Licensure, Certification, Registration: Must have and maintain an unencumbered State of Georgia RN license, BLS, ACLS, and PALS required. ACLS/PALS required within 90 days of date of hire. CNOR and or CST Certification is strongly preferred.
Work Experience: Six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Calculator, personal computer & spreadsheet, telephone, facsimile machine, paper shredder, copier, printer, general office equipment.
