Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy is Hiring a Security Officer, Part-Time Near Aurora, IL

Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

The selected candidate will be responsible for responding to calls for service, writing reports, and providing and ensuring adequate patrols of the campus to promote a safe learning and working environment for the IMSA Community and its visitors to the campus. Security Officers may be responsible for Front Desk Operations including, but not limited to; monitoring access to main building, registering guests through a visitor management system, monitoring CCTV camera system, answering telephone switchboard system, monitoring alarm systems, and relaying calls for service to other Patrol Officers.

Hours/Shift/Work Schedule: This position is a part time non-exempt position. Hours Worked: Hours may vary based on need and availability, but preference for candidates able to work 7:00am - 3:00pm or 3:00pm - 11:00pm on either Saturdays or Sundays.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follow all Department Rules and Regulations
  • Follow all Department and Academy Policies and Procedures
  • Perform adequate and effective patrols of campus in order to locate, evaluate, and mitigate known safety and security concerns and/or issues to promote a safe learning and working environment for the IMSA Community and its visitors to the campus
  • Complete reports and other documentation when required
  • Assist with initial training of new Officers
  • Assist with all safety drills
  • Perform investigations and/or follow-up on crime reports
  • Respond to and handle all incidents properly
  • Monitor all scheduled and spontaneous activities on campus to ensure a safe and appropriate atmosphere
  • Act in the absence of higher ranking Security personnel or appropriate Academy Administration when they are not present or cannot be reached
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Acceptable written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with a variety of individuals and diverse populations
  • Ability to work independently, resolve issues, seek help when needed, and work on concurrent projects
  • Experienced user of common computer hardware (e.g. laptops), office productivity software (e.g. Microsoft Office), mobile devices (e.g. phone), and common peripherals (e.g. printers, others…)
  • Able to meet physical requirements of job:
    • Walk for extended periods of time
    • Stand for extended periods of time
    • Climb stairs
    • Climb ladders
    • Run when necessary
    • Walk on uneven, wet, or snowy/icy locations
    • See clearly at extended distances
    • Tolerate extremes in weather conditions
    • Work any time of the day
    • Possess a good sense of smell
    • Able to lift up to 50 pounds with no assistance
    • Remove an adult-sized person from a location and move that person to safety
    • Physically restrain combative persons
    • Perform light maintenance; i.e., manipulating screw drivers and other tools
    • Possess manual dexterity to manipulate small switches and dials
    • Able to see full spectrum of color
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSThe preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Prior experience in designated field of work
  • Law Enforcement
  • Security
  • Police Explorer, Police Cadet, or currently enrolled in Criminal Justice courses

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed in an office setting as well as outside with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Some time is spent working on a computer. This role requires the following physical activities: talking, hearing and visual acuity, sitting, walking (on uneven, wet, or snowy/icy locations), running, bending, stooping, climbing stairs and ladders, tolerate extremes in weather conditions, physically restrain combative persons, finger dexterity, ability to see full spectrum of color, able to remove an adult-sized person from a location and move that person to safety, and able to lift up to 50 pounds with no assistance.

COMPENSATION:

This position is a part-time, 12-month, non-exempt, employment-at-will position. Starting rate is no less than $17.94/hr. The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy offers retirement benefits to part-time employees. The State Universities Retirement System (SURS) is reciprocal with other Illinois retirement systems such as the Teachers’ Retirement Systems of Illinois (TRS) and the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
