Eastside Employment Services is Hiring a Trades Instructor Near Wilmington, DE

The Eastside Career Development Center is a federal 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation invested in closing the workforce skills gap by providing all people, more specifically underserved communities with the training necessary for sustainable jobs and careers. Our anti-poverty intention is to continuously receive learner and industry feedback to improve our training delivery and remain relevant, inclusive, and equitable insofar as learning opportunities enable learners to thrive in the classroom and the workplace. More specifically, our services include (1) face-to-face skilled trades training, education, and certification and (2) online healthcare program training, education, and certification. The products we provide in the tuition include a safety vest, safety goggles, safety boots, and a clean white dress shirt. Our mission is to train individuals to transform their lives and community. Our vision is to provide opportunities to reduce the number of poverty-stricken residents living in distressed neighborhoods. Our values are guided by procedural justice principles to treat people with respect, dignity, and empowerment.

Required Education Level: Preferred qualifications include an (1) Adult Education Certificate, (2) Adult Education Diploma, (2) Journeyperson Certification, or a (3) Bachelor of Education. However, (4) other sources of education and (5) proven industry experience may be considered.

Will you accept job related experience? Yes, if the job-related experiences come with academic or corporate education certifications such as:

• A journeyman in residential, commercial, and industrial applications

• Certified that the craftsman

• Electrician

• Carpenter

• Plumber

• Machinist

• HVAC technician

• The candidate has supervised workers with less experience and partook in training them.

• Etc.

Other Shift Schedules, If Applicable: Similar to a public college or university, ECDC programs run in the (1) fall, (2) winter, and (3) spring. The instructor is not paid during the off-season but will be paid if they are required to join a tradeshow, recruitment efforts, public meetings, or presentations.

Description and Duties of the Job:

1. Reports to the Regional Training Coordinator.

2. Engage in a weekly 15-minute scrum with your supervisor or with the Executive Director in their absence.

3. Share all anticipated concerns or potential issues with the Supervisor or Executive Director in their absence.

4. Required to teach skilled trade program offerings and related courses on weekdays. There may be afternoon or evening options in the future.

5. Instructors are required to follow a prescribed syllabus and lesson plan to deliver lectures and hands on applications for one or more of the following classes:

a. Drywall Installation Certificate.

b. Mobile Crane Operator Certificate.

c. Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate.

d. Plumbing Certificate.

e. Photovoltaic Certificate.

f. Or another certification that suits your qualifications or gaps in local employment.

6. In preparation for each class, the instructor is responsible for retrieving a trolley full of 25 laptops and bringing them to the class, locking up the trolley at the end, and letting your supervisor know if a repair is needed for one of the laptops.
7. Demonstrate a high level of independent judgment, organization, communication skills, discretion in handling confidential student information, initiative, and problem-solving skills are required.
8. Promote skill trades programs to potential students to join your upcoming classes, which might mean sharing flyers or using your network to promote the program.
9. Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, and take notes, attendance, and maintain student records.
10. Responsible for taking attendance or having sign-in sheets, teaching, training, evaluating (e.g., testing), and tracking student work, to the extent that reports are completed and shared with Supervisor in a timely fashion (e.g., monthly reports).
11. Conduct quarterly ESCD workshops, seminars, or presentations for 5 minutes to discuss the work being done with students.
NB: There are no benefits associated with this position.

Specific Skills Required:

1. Demonstration: The instructor will deliver a 15-minute teaching and learning presentation on a prescribed subject during the interview.

2. Attend a company paid for skilled trades training for instructors.

3. Deliver experiential learning in the classroom.

4. Based on the prescribed syllabi, prepare lesson plans and practice your delivery.

5. Instructors must be willing to teach to the individual rather than just the group.

6. Willing to learn how to deliver a flipped classroom, empowering the students to demonstrate their cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills.

7. Using and teaching Microsoft Suite is necessary (e.g., beginner, intermediate, and advanced MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

8. When necessary, instructors must be willing to use audio-visual equipment to present or show videos or slides.

9. Be willing to work with new technologies.

10. Instructors must have an understanding of Basic Numeracy (e.g., math).

11. Basic Writing (e.g., APA, email, resume, cover letter, etc.).
