Description
The Hampton Aquaplex is accepting applications for Aquatics Director. The Aquatics Director is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and supervision of the Aquatics Department. Under the direction of the General Manager, the Aquatics Director is responsible for creating community recreational aquatics opportunities for the general public, Aquaplex members, investors, and the City of Hampton. Additionally, the Aquatics Director is a vital part of the Aquaplex management team to provide exemplary services to the community. This includes sharing responsibility as the building supervisor (Manager-on-Duty), participation in special events, fundraising campaigns, and shared leadership duties as assigned periodically. Also, the Aquatics Director is expected to participate in Aquaplex meetings (both staff and event planning) and will develop and collaborate with other team members to develop aquatic programs with the goal of better usage of the pool and continually serving the needs of the community. The Aquatics Director will have the ability to teach or substitute coach swim teams, youth swim lessons, lifeguarding, or other program involvement as needed. The Aquatics Director will also maintain or assist in maintenance of pool and facility operations and oversee or support equipment maintenance to ensure proper facility functioning.
SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIP:
The Aquatics Director reports to the General Manager. Work is performed under general guidance and direction according to City and Department policies and procedures, as well as state and federal rules, regulations, and guidelines. Provides direct supervision to staff involved in programming and operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manage and supervise facility programming and operations.
  • Plan, implement, and supervise a wide variety of year-round Aquatics recreational opportunities for individuals of all ages and abilities.
  • Develop program goals and objectives in collaboration with the General Manager.
  • Organize and delegate day-to-day operations and special projects as directed.
  • Assist in implementing policies and procedures for facility and related offerings.
  • Assist or lead in hiring, training, and supervising of direct-report staff members to provide appropriate services to the community as lifeguards, swim instructors, and coaches, and other related positions.
  • Evaluate and manage performance of assigned staff in the program areas.
  • Under advisement of the General Manager, assist in corrective action plans with staff, as needed and appropriate.
  • Establish necessary systems and training methods to ensure exemplary staff performance.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and team members and facilitate a cooperative work environment.
  • Enforce all personnel policies and guidelines in accordance with Aquaplex policies.
  • Conduct periodic and annual reviews for all direct-report staff, and present them to the General Manager.
  • Collaborate with the General Manager to conceptualize, develop, coordinate, and monitor activities and events for all ages and abilities. Oversee scheduling of program activities as directed.
  • Evaluate program activities and overall program area, identifying strengths and opportunities for improvement.
  • Compile reports and related paperwork as directed.
  • Serve as manager-on-duty for facility activities, staff and programs, providing technical expertise, instructor training, and direction.
  • Supervise and manage activities in program registration, facility rentals, points of sale, and general revenue opportunities.
  • Lead facility programs, teach swim lessons and lifeguard on as-needed basis.
  • Contribute to membership development and retention, always placing the needs of the members as a key priority.
  • Assist in developing appropriate budgets, and monitor daily, weekly, and monthly finances.
  • Provide information to the General Manager to monitor financial performance.
ADDITIONAL WORK ANTICIPATED:
  • Act as resource to management and employees regarding Aquaplex facility and offerings.
  • Remain knowledgeable of current and/or new developments in the field through professional memberships, conference or workshop attendance, and networking with other professionals.
  • May serve as a technical resource for capital improvements and remodels of facility
  • May perform physical activities in programs and events, including moving, lifting, pushing, and carrying equipment or supplies.
  • Performs other related work of a similar nature or level.
  • Must be able to work irregular shifts to include days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed, required, or assigned by the General Manager.
Requirements
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to provide the applicant with the knowledge, skills and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the job will be considered.
  • Bachelor's degree in recreation or related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience coordinating aquatics program(s) required; four (4) years preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory or lead worker experience required.
  • Experience working with individuals with special needs is preferred.
  • Current Lifeguarding Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, and Instructor Trainer certifications are required
  • Current Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Automated External Defibrillation, Administering Emergency Oxygen, and Bloodborne Pathogens Training certifications are required.
  • Current Pool Operator's certification required
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
Knowledge of:
  • Municipal Aquatics recreation that is inclusive of programs for all ages and abilities.
  • Relevant government and/or community recreational institutions, organizations, procedures, and processes.
  • Familiarity with the surrounding community and environment.
  • Fiscal and records management and ability to develop, prepare and implement program budgets.
  • Aquatic-related operation systems.
  • Department operations and procedures, federal, state, and local applicable regulations.
Skills:
  • Strong management skills, including leadership and supervisory skills, problem analysis and decision-making, planning and organizing, management control, adaptability/flexibility, and time management.
  • Must be detail-oriented and have outstanding organizational skills, as well as strong time management skills.
  • Strong oral communication and interpersonal skills for working with a diverse population including other employees, public officials, program participants, and the general public.
  • Strong written communication skills for developing reports, correspondence, policies, procedures and organizational communications.
  • Strong computer skills including knowledge of Google Suite.
  • Ability to maintain focus in a high-volume, fast-paced environment, and be decisive when necessary.
Abilities:

Physical ability to perform essential functions of the job, including:
  • Ability to tread water for 2 minutes using legs only with arms crossed on chest;
  • Ability to swim 300 yards with 100 yards crawl stroke, 100 yards breaststroke, and 100 yards either stroke;
  • Ability to recover a 10 lb. brick from 12 feet;
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate pool maintenance equipment and/or rescue/emergency equipment without assistance
  • Visual ability to read and analyze chemical tests, including color comparison to a standard
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to kneel, crouch, or bend at the waist to conduct tests, lift patrons or materials of 50 lbs, and potentially around 100lbs.
  • Communicate verbally, in person and over the phone.

TYPICAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed year-round at the Hampton Aquaplex, indoors (temperature and humidity-controlled) and outdoors (ambient conditions).

  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
