JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of a licensed dentist provide preventive dental care and instruction. Perform general dental hygiene duties to include periodic recalls, scaling/root planning, sealant placement. Perform all needed services for off site screening/sealants to include oral hygiene instructions, screening examinations, referral coordination. Supervise dental assistant while off site and work with dental office managers to provide and ensure continuation and follow up of care.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Dental and Mental Health
• Provides dental hygiene/screening effectively and appropriately to all patients
• Exercises appropriate treatment and referral practices
Compliance, Policy, and Procedure
• Adheres to an established hygiene/screening schedule
Patient Care
• Effectively communicates information to patients
Communication
• Maintains productive communications with supervisor and colleagues
Checking, Examining, and Recording
• Documentation consistently contains concise, complete and clinically pertinent
information and demonstrates clinicians rationale for treatment decisions.
• Dental plans for community or school based education services are documented so that another clinician can perform all duties in the absence of dental hygienist
• Documentation of school based or community educational services includes assessing learning achieved by students if appropriate and applicable
Willingness to Learn
• Utilizes feedback to adjust and modify teaching methods or plans
Insurance and Billing
• Assists in administrative coordination of insurance billing off site services.
Outreach
• Coordinates off site school screening schedules with delivery site.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
• Graduation from an accredited dental hygiene program required (bachelors or AA degree)
• Current licensure as a dental hygienist in Maryland
• Waiver of Supervision Certification preferred; eligibility to obtain certificate required
• Public Health and Hygiene Certificate preferred
• Maryland RDH required
• Certificate to provide local anesthesia preferred
• Certificate to monitor nitrous oxide preferred
• Five years experience as dental hygienist preferred
