Job Description:

Position Description:

Develops and drives database performance, standards, and initiatives using database technologies -- Oracle, Postgres, and SQL. Improves and maintains end-to-end database technology stacks -- Exadata within Oracle Database environments. Improves and maintains database performance within platforms -- Cassandra and engineered systems. Performs application database administration using Aurora PostgresSQL services, SQL code review, performance analysis, query tuning, database application design, physical data modeling, development support, and software engineering. Participates in database replication using distributed replication technologies -- Oracle Goldengate and EDB Replication. Facilitates data migration to cloud database platforms -- Cosmos DB, Yugabyte, Cockroach DB, Azure, and other cloud native databases. Visualizes and structures workflows and tasks using agile methodologies -- Scrum and Kanban.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Tests, defines, and evaluates database maintenance tools and build processes.
  • Establishes performance tuning criteria and methods in coordination with internal and external technical resources.
  • Develops and maintains policies, procedures, and techniques in order to minimize future incident occurrence.
  • Defines security requirements and operational procedures to ensure network integrity, physical protection, and authorized access to the network and applications.
  • Develops business cases to justify information security architecture initiatives.
  • Enforces storage management standards.
  • Defines the scope of change and impact to other interfaces.
  • Creates high level architecture design for the enterprise.
  • Mentors junior team members.
  • Modifies existing databases and database management systems or collaborates with programmers and analysts to make changes.
  • Develops methods for integrating products so they work properly together -- customizing commercial databases to fit specific needs.
  • Confers with systems analysts and other software engineers/developers to design systems and to obtain information on project limitations and capabilities, performance requirements and interfaces.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree (or foreign education equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related field and five (5) years of experience as a Principal Database Administrator (or closely related occupation) developing database performance standards, and initiatives using database technologies -- Oracle, Postgres, and SQL.

Or, alternatively, Master’s degree (or foreign education equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related field and three (3) years of experience as a Principal Database Administrator (or closely related occupation) developing database performance standards, and initiatives using database technologies -- Oracle, Postgres, and SQL.

Skills and Knowledge:

Candidate must also possess:

  • Demonstrated Expertise (“DE”) designing, installing, configuring, and performance tuning data replication across homogeneous and heterogenous databases; performing end-to-end replication (Uni and Bi-directional) across Oracle RAC multi-sites using Oracle Golden Gate replication; and setting up Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions for highly critical databases residing on engineered systems -- Exadata and Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) -- using Dataguard.
  • DE designing, planning, and implementing database migration practices from On-premises data centers to Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud Infrastructure within a Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) data environment using Oracle Data Pump (expdp and impdp), database links, and Database Management Systems (DMS); and setting up infrastructure on Azure using Terraform code.
  • DE coordinating and supporting database objects (stored procedures, functions, views, indexes, materialized views, triggers, partitioning tables, tablespaces, and schemas) by deploying changes for On-premises, Oracle, MongoDB, and Microsoft SQL server databases, and AWS Cloud RDS instances using Toad, Mongo Atlas, PLSQL, and SQL tools (Plus, Developer, and Server Management Studio).
  • DE performing database optimization, storage management, and performance tuning using Realtime SQL; monitoring alerts and reports using Oracle Enterprise Manager, AWS CloudWatch, and performance insights; optimizing queries using SQL Tuning advisor and SQL Profiling; and implementing database upgrades, patching, backup/recovery, full/differential backups, and refreshes using RMAN, Data Guard, OPtach, CronJobs, Bash Scripts, and SQL server scheduler jobs.
