Fisheries Technician IV

(2) Two Positions

Fisheries Resource Management (FRM)

Department of Natural Resources

Hourly Wage: $21.11/Regular/Full-Time

Location: Columbia River OR/WA

Responsible for a variety of semi-technical and semi-skilled tasks relating to fisheries management in the zone 6 tribal fisheries. Duties include but are not limited to: recording of harvest monitoring data, sturgeon sampling, smelt and lamprey fish collection and distribution, collection of genetic samples from fish harvested in the zone 6 fisheries, collection and transport of surplus fish from state and federal fish hatcheries, data entry, written and oral communications with various agency personnel and fish buyers to coordinate monitoring, sample collection efforts, and hatchery surplus events.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • As a member of the harvest monitoring team collect harvest data through on-site monitoring or fisher interviews. Record data such as fishing effort, catch, species, length, weight, sex, etc.
  • Collect genetic samples while accurately recording bio sampling data such as: species, length, marks, sex.
  • Assist with hatchery surplus events, pick up, transport and distribute salmon carcasses from state and federal hatcheries to replenish the tribal freezer storage for funerals, memorials, etc., and/or direct hand out to the tribal members. May be required to coordinate surplus events with hatchery managers.
  • Participate in smelt and/or lamprey harvests to replenish the tribal freezer, longhouses and churches, elder's kitchen, and/or direct distribution to the tribal members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of standard fisheries principles and procedures.
  • Skills in basic computer and email programs including Windows applications, MS Word, Excel, Gmail, and navigate various internet applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with tribal fishers, fish buyers, other agency personnel, and the general public.
  • Ability to work nights and outside under all types of conditions and to perform physical labor.
  • Ensures GSA vehicle provided is operated in a safe manner and maintained according to prescribed maintenance schedules.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of experience as a Fish Technician III or equivalent.
  • Required to pass pre-employment drug test.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
  • Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Associates Degree in Fisheries or related field.
  • Ability to work along the Columbia River during the Zone 6 harvest monitoring seasons; duty station is at fishing sites along the Columbia River and its tributaries.
