Hourly Wage: $17.36/Regular/Full-Time
Incumbent is responsible to maintain security of facility, custody and correctional treatment of inmates 24 hours a day, 7 days-a-week, in accordance with established regulations and procedures. All duties are performed within the secured area of the Yakama Nation Corrections Facility.
Examples of Work Performed:
Receives and books incoming prisoners. Receives and safeguards prisoner's personal property and valuables. Processes inmate fingerprints and mug shots.
Conducts searches of inmate housing units and work areas for contraband. Searches inmates using pat down, metal detector, and/or strip searches. Inspects inmates for injuries.
Performs duties utilizing post orders, Standard Operating Procedures Manual, program statements, internal correspondence, and gleans information from staff meetings.
Prepares incident reports, minor work orders, memos, and accident or injury reports.
Maintains a working knowledge of radio, electronic equipment, locking devices, alarm systems, and other security equipment used daily. As needed, operates program vehicle to transport inmates.
Directs inmate movement and maintains control of assigned areas. Instructs inmates in living quarters on proper housekeeping procedures for sanitation and personal hygiene.
Processes prisoners release from custody. Verifies discharge documents. Maintains security and accountable records of cash bail, fines, fees, and bail bonds.
Conducts periodic checks of facility and cells every 30 minutes, Verifies condition and proper conduct of inmates. High risk inmates are checked every 5 minutes. Documents cell checks using the Guard-1 Plus System.
Observes inmate behavior and disciplinary concerns. Maintains accountability of inmate work tools and equipment. Dispenses inmate meals, retrieves meal trays, and accounts for all utensils. Dispenses jail uniforms, blankets, personal hygiene items, towels and general supplies as needed.
Performs duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Public Safety Department organizational chart and established chain-of-command.
May be assigned new projects and tasks not included in the description, or to assist other staff as requested by supervisor ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge, in general, of federal and tribal criminal laws to recognize when violations of law occur and when individuals violating these laws must be placed under arrest.
Knowledge of and ability to identify narcotics and narcotic paraphernalia.
Skill in use of a computer, 2-way radio, telephone, security video cameras, and fire alarm system.
Ability to exercise sound judgment in urgent decisions affecting life, well-being, civil liberties, and property.
Ability to adhere to high standards of personal conduct on and off the job.
Ability to maintain alertness mentally and physically; maintain 100% physical fitness evidenced by an annual physical and PEB training.
Ability and capability to quickly react to any emergency (escape, riot, etc.).
Ability to apply basic counseling to influence positive attitudes and behavior of inmates.
Ability to work with all types of inmates in a firm and fair manner including those with emotional disorders and disruptive behavior patterns.
Ability to handle stress and exposure to potentially dangerous situations on a daily basis.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with all levels of personnel including employees, supervisors, elected officials, etc.
Ability to keep abreast of current and changing correction facility trends and practices.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to work as a team member.
Ability to work independently and productively with minimal supervision.
Ability to be reliable, dependable, and trustworthy.
Ability to understand and follow established chain of command.
Minimum Requirements
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent AND 2 years office work experience.
Required to successfully complete mandatory Basic Corrections Officer Academy within 6 months of hire.
Required to obtain a First Aid/CPR card within 3 months of hire. Must keep current for the duration of employment.
Required to wear a department uniform.
Required to take annual physical and PEB training.
Must be willing to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends, holidays, or rotating shifts.
Required to attend and successfully complete mandatory training.
Must understand the position and working conditions and consider the impact on personal lifestyle and family.
Must maintain strict confidentiality of program and client information.
Required to sign a code of conduct and understand sanctions for misconduct.
Must be 21 years of age and older.
Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
Must pass a pre-employment background check.
Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
