Description
The Assistant Director for Education and Engagement at the Cantor Art Gallery will support the Gallery Director in expanding and enhancing student, faculty, and public engagement with exhibitions, with a keen emphasis on student inclusion and supporting the operational needs of academic engagement with the arts on campus. Reporting to the Director, the Assistant Director will play a key role in situating the Gallery as part of a diverse intellectual community at Holy Cross. The Assistant Director will maintain relationships with academic departments on campus and with community partners to facilitate interdisciplinary and interactive experiences and integrate the liberal arts values of the classroom with the Cantor Art Gallery's collections, exhibitions, and programming. Key Responsibilities- Exhibitions
  • Assist with exhibition and event development and planning.
  • Provide operational support in the production of exhibition labels, vinyl, shipping arrangements, and other logistical needs.
  • Participate in curatorial initiatives, including campus spaces outside of the gallery.
- Education
  • Manage group visits to the Gallery; schedule, facilitate, and teach various student, school, and adult groups.
  • Develop Gallery interactives; develop ways to extend learning opportunities for exhibition themes.
  • Develop plan for maximizing student engagement with gallery operations and planning through Roger Hankins internship, Weiss summer research fellowship, and other academic experiences.
  • Redefine and expand partnerships and programs with College student groups, as well as area K-12 students and regional colleges and universities.
  • Support faculty research related to exhibitions.
- Collection
  • Maintain object records for Gallery's Permanent Collection.
  • Schedule access to collection for students, faculty, and the public.
- Engagement
  • Expand academic engagement with exhibitions though programs in the Gallery, the Prior Performing Arts Center, and other venues across campus.
  • With Director, partner with local community members to host educational and arts-based programming and/or to host community-led programming related to the arts.
  • Collaborate with faculty to design course-specific engagement with rotating exhibitions.
  • Identify target audience groups and develop public programs to match needs and interests of various constituents.
  • Manage Gallery programs: create and process contracts, make hospitality arrangements for visiting scholars, work with contacts across the Prior Performing Arts Center and the College to coordinate schedules, spaces, and technical needs.
  • Hire, train, and supervise student gallery attendants; reshape position as student docent to move focus toward visitor engagement.

  • Assist with grant writing; initiate, research, and execute grant opportunities to support educational programs.
  • Support inclusive environment and foster culture of the recognition and support of diversity and equity.
  • Play a key role in maintaining a relationship with the Prior by attending weekly meetings.
  • Oversee and coordinate budget activities related to programmatic areas.
  • Collaborate with professionals involved in arts marketing to promote the Cantor, including by assisting with marketing and outreach; maintaining electronic and physical mailing lists, producing content for marketing team as needed, and assisting with creation and scheduling of social media posts.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of experience in educational or arts-forward organization.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple projects.
  • Flexible, collaborative thinker and demonstrated ability to work with a team setting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in art history, studio art, arts administration, or art education.
  • Experience working in a managerial position.
  • Graduate study in Art History, Arts Administration, Museum Studies, Museum
Education, or related field
  • Experience or familiarity with an academic environment.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud suite.
About the Cantor Art Gallery
The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery exists to promote and support the intellectual and cultural life of Holy Cross. Through its exhibitions and acquisitions, both historical and contemporary, the Gallery serves as a catalyst for the search for meaning and value in life and history. The Cantor Gallery has special responsibility for integrating the liberal arts values of the College and the classroom by linking exhibitions to the broader curriculum.
Through Gallery exhibitions, Holy Cross educates members of the College community, the Worcester community and the larger community of scholars and artists about the fundamental intellectual, cultural, spiritual and aesthetic issues encountered through art.
Located in the new Prior Performing Arts Center, a state-of-the art integrated arts building designed by Diller Scofidio Renfro, the Cantor Art Gallery resides within the Provost's area and is heavily integrated into the academic and intellectual life of the College. The role of the Gallery is rooted in the Catholic, Jesuit, liberal arts identity of the College, which is detailed in the College's Mission Statement (http://www.holycross.edu/mission) and Aspire, the College's new strategic plan (https://aspire.holycross.edu). In addition to the wide range of academic departments across the College and their faculty and students, the Gallery works closely with administrative offices including the Office of Risk Management; Public Safety; Graphic Arts; Communications and Marketing; and Campus Facilities. Additional Information: This is a full time, exempt level position. The College is committed to providing competitive market pay for its employees. The annual salary range for this position is from $64,000 - $70,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications. The College also offers a competitive benefits package for full-time staff, including:
