DESCRIPTION

Starting salary for this position is: $3,700 (Monthly).
Employees starting at the entry step of this range receive salary step advancement after six months and every 12 months thereafter. If an employee starting at anything higher than the entry step of the range, will have salary step advancement after 12 months and salary step advancement every 12 months thereafter until they reach the top of the salary range. Each salary step advancement will be approximately a 5% increase in salary.

The Community Colleges of Spokane is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Theater Lab Instructional Technician in the SFCC Comm/Modern Language Division.
JOB SUMMARY
Under general direction of the Dean of Humanities, the Theater Lab Instructional Technician will support the Director of Drama and drama faculty and guest artists by managing and maintaining the theater arts facilities and production practices necessary for the successful education of theater students. This position will work closely with instructional faculty in theater and with members of the public who attend productions and/or who rent the theater facility.
This position is housed in the department of Communication Arts and Modern Languages (CAML), a large, diverse department with a strong regional reputation for innovation and excellence. This is a non-instructional position that requires occasional weekend and evening hours.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work collaboratively with SFCC Drama faculty to: *
    • Support technical theater training of students.
    • Assist with set and stage construction.
    • Assist with and support production needs, including back and/or front of house duties as needed.
    • Monitor final rehearsals to assist the technical aspects of mounting a show.
    • Attend regular drama program meetings and advise faculty on instructional practices and opportunities within the theater space.
  • Inspect, operate, maintain, and safeguard the technical equipment and assets associated with the SFCC Drama production and storage facilities. *
  • Coordinate with campus facilities for regular theater maintenance and upkeep, and the occasional improvement project. *
  • Advise on necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging and special equipment needs for events and performances in advance of production dates. *
  • Advise production managers, faculty, and lighting and sound designers on the technical specifications, cost and usage of technical equipment required for productions. Assist with the implementation of approved technical designs. *
  • Coordinate with community groups renting the theater facility. *
    • Production safety and limitations.
    • Technical capacities.
    • Assist with hiring hourly technical staff to operate the technical production equipment.
  • Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment. Arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints. Perform preventive maintenance on equipment. *
  • Make recommendations to the SFCC Director of Drama and department and division leadership regarding equipment purchases and capital improvements. *
    • Coordinate with the Director of Drama on Tech Fee requests, Capital improvement requests, or other requests for funding.
  • Monitor front and back of house operations for all productions (drama program, college, district, rental, etc.) in the Spartan Theater. *
  • Coordinate with the Director of Drama to develop a work schedule to provide optimal support for the drama program and productions. *
  • Model professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions. *
  • Comply with district policies, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statutes and collective bargaining agreements. *
  • Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned. *

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • AFA in Theater, Drama or related performing arts discipline.
    • 2 years experience in performing arts technical production, management, and/or operations.
    • Demonstrated competence in theater production practices, including stage management, lighting and sound, and set construction and strike.
    • Demonstrated competence in the principles, practices and trends in safe operational procedures in live performance productions.
    • Demonstrated competence in identifying problems and solutions, and developing practices that avoid recurrence of problems related to production and facility management.
    • Demonstrated ability to give clear directives and use independent, rational judgment to make sound and effective decisions.
    DE SIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • BA, BFA, or MA/MFA in Theater, Drama or related discipline.
    • 3 or more years in theater production participation and/or management.
    • Membership or certification from one or more of the following
      • International Alliance of Theater Stage Employees (IATSE)
      • OSHA 10 certification
      • Event Safety Alliance
  • Recent experience working in an educational theater environment that includes interacting with students and faculty.
  • Experience working in or on children's theater productions, musical theater productions, and/or outdoor or alternative venues.
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of relevant theater design software, such as Vectorworks, HeavyM, QLab, Audacity.
  • CONDITIONS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

    TOTAL COMPENSATION WITH BENEFITS : $61,026 - $78,173.

    Total compensation is an estimate based upon adding the following amounts together:
    • Base compensation of $44,400 - $59,616, plus
    • Current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates, plus
    • Median retirement fund contributions.
    The actual total will vary depending upon each employee's enrollment choices.
    Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. An offer of employment will not carry with it any responsibility or obligation on the part of the district to sponsor an H1-B visa. In addition, the Community Colleges of Spokane maintains a drug-free work environment and prohibits all smoking in the college buildings and state-owned vehicles.     PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    • Work is performed in office, classroom, and theater environments with frequent interruptions and background noise.

    • Occasional exposure to fumes, dust, odors and/or biohazards.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    • Full-time schedule (12 months, 40 hours a week).
    • This position is overtime eligible.
    • 6-month probationary period.
