City of Upland is recruiting for Police CadetAPPLY TODAY!APPLICATION FILING PERIOD WILL CLOSE UPON RECEIPT OF THE FIRST 100 APPLICATIONS.Under immediate supervision, performs a wide variety of non-sworn duties in various divisions of the Police Department, including lobby reception, records, patrol, traffic, property and evidence, and/or administration; provides general office support as assigned; and performs related work as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives immediate supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This entry level classification is responsible for performing routine non-sworn civilian status work in the Police Department. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. This position is intended to prepare the incumbent to progress toward achieving a future career, possibly within the law enforcement field.***APPLICANTS MUST BE 17.5 YEARS OF AGE AT TIME OF APPLICATION, 18 YEARS OF AGE AT TIME OF EMPLOYMENT, OR OLDER. ***CURRENT VACANCY: Multiple part-time vacancies exist in the Upland Police Department. This position is limited to 960 hours per Fiscal Year. Eligibility lists are in effect for one year. The resulting list from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies. SALARY: Listed hourly wage indicates the first and last steps of the range for the position.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job. Learns, understands, and applies Department and mandated applicable laws, ordinances, policies, and procedures.Provides technical assistance to the public at the front desk and over the telephone; gathers information and records complaints; directs callers to other departmental personnel or other agencies as appropriate; learns and operates police radio communications equipment.Prepares and processes a variety of reports, forms, citations, applications, and permits; types, compiles, and tabulates basic statistical and financial data; tracks status of cases and warrants; maintains related files and records.Assists with vehicle release duties such as regular and thirty (30) day tows, tow hearings, vehicle repossessions, property releases, and vehicle auctions.Releases records as appropriate such as criminal reports, crash reports, and calls for service.Performs California Law Enforcement Telecommunication Systems (CLETS) data entry duties; enters missing/found persons, impounded/stored/repossessed vehicles, and lost and found property into the appropriate records system.Maintains contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserves good relationships with the general public; takes an active role in areas of public education relative to crime and crime prevention.Acts as a court liaison, delivers criminal reports to the District Attorney’s Office for review, and collects court documents related to the filing or rejection of criminal cases.Assists with crime prevention and community relations programs and in the Investigation Division, as assigned.Observes and complies with all City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; to operate a motor vehicle and visit various City sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. This is primarily a sedentary office classification although standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 20 pounds.WORK ENVIRONMENT: Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees also work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances, and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. The principal duties of this class are performed in a police station environment with exposure to criminal offenders, mentally ill individuals, and persons potentially infected with communicable diseases.
