Under general supervision, instructs individual lessons in a specified area.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Instructs various levels of lessons. Keeps accurate records of lessons being taught. Provides a structured format for the proper progression and development at the appropriate levels of the participant taking the private lesson.
Responsible for preparation and planning of private lessons.
Provides quality customer service, including interacting with participants and/or parents to answer questions and resolve problems.
Ensures all possible safety measures are observed. Responds to emergency situations as required and maintains accurate accident and incident reports.
Communicates, enforces, and complies with city and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures. Reports any issues or concerns to supervisor.
Responsible for the set-up and tear-down of any required equipment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
Must be at least 16 years of age and have at least one year of teaching experience in the specified area within a recreation setting or a private club, or six months of experience as an instructor at the city of Thornton in the specified area.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate and First Aid Certificate, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.
For private swim lessons: IPAP training is required to teach lessons for level 3 and under. A certification in swim instruction such as Red Cross, WSI or equivalent or ability to obtain within 30 days OR at least one year of swim lesson instruction.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the policies and procedures of the city of Thornton and the department.
Knowledge of skills needed for specified area of instruction
Knowledge of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid activities.
Skill in developing a participant in the specified area of instruction.
Skill in teaching lessons in the specified area of instruction for various levels.
Ability to effectively lead and coordinate lessons.
Ability to promote and provide quality lessons.
Ability to demonstrate skills that are being taught.
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
Ability to conduct lessons in the specified area of instruction to various ages.
Ability to provide a fun learning environment.
Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.
Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.
Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences.
Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays, or flexible schedules.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, walk, kneel, squat, stoop, climb, crawl, repeatedly twist the upper body, talk, hear, see, demonstrate manual dexterity and perform light lifting. The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions
