Description
This Lean Six Sigma Utility is seeking a highly motivated individual who enjoys working night shifts and is looking to join a diverse award-winning Utility where there is room for career development and advancement. Responsible for the efficient control of processes and equipment at the Water Treatment and Reuse Plants in order to meet all regulatory compliance requirements. Responsible for operation of pumps, filters, chemical feed systems, membranes and other water treatment equipment. Requires observation, interpretation and documentation of plant operations and data to produce a high quality, sufficient volume of water. Performs minor equipment maintenance and housekeeping. Performs related duties as required. This position is classified as "Essential" and requires working different shifts, emergencies and overtime.
Typical Qualifications
Trainee - Must have passed the State of Florida Class "C" Drinking Water or Wastewater exam (present examination results letter with application) As a condition of employment, obtain a Florida Class "C" Drinking Water or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators License as prescribed by State law and meet performance standards of Operator I before being promoted to that status by the end of a two year period.
Operator I - Must possess a Florida Class "C" Drinking Water or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators License with a willingness to obtain additional licenses or certifications.
Valid Florida driver's license, high school diploma or equivalent required. College degree, Florida Class "A" or "B" Drinking Water or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, dual Operator Licenses, SEDA MOC certification, are desirable. Candidates must possess: effective communication skills with the ability to read, speak, write, and understand English; Knowledge of software programs, such as Microsoft Office Suite, asset management programs and SCADA preferred. Testing will be conducted on MS Office products . Obtaining a Lean Six Sigma White belt in the first year is required. Must have the ability to perform arithmetical computations as related to treatment processes along with a knowledge of chemistry and laboratory procedures as applied to water treatment. Must have the ability to perform routine chemical tests for process control and troubleshooting. Ability to monitor operational processes, take accurate readings, keep accurate records, detect issues, take and document corrective actions. Must have knowledge of and follow all safety procedures while promoting a safe work environment. Must have the ability and willingness to perform minor equipment maintenance, housekeeping and other job duties as assigned. Ability to interact with other employees and the public to provide excellent customer service. A strong understanding of ethical behavior required. Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of all city ethics and conflicts of interest policies. Ability to see, read, speak, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical abilities include walking, kneeling, climbing, lifting, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling. Ability to perform moderate lifting up to 50 lbs. The noise level in this environment is usually moderate but can be intense. Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Exposure to chemicals (some hazardous), machinery hazards and adverse weather conditions. Some job duties require personal protective equipment, therefore applicant must be able to pass a pulmonary function medical test. Must have ability to detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness.
•Operator I when certified as a "B" operator will receive $50 each biweekly pay period in addition to basic salary and when certified as an "A" operator shall receive $100 each biweekly pay period in addition to basic salary.

Employees are paid biweekly. The pay range consists of a minimum and maximum salary. Initial appointment is usually made at the minimum salary of the pay range, but a higher salary may be considered for an especially well qualified candidate or to meet unusual needs. Annual merit increases of up to 3% up to the maximum of the pay range are based on fully effective job performance, or above, and are not automatic. Eligible Fire department combat employees receive annual merit increases of up to 4%.
Group health insurance is paid for by the City; 100% for full time employees and 50% for eligible dependents.
Paid leave includes: Vacation - accrue nine (9) days annually with additional days awarded for longevity; Sick Leave - accrue twelve (12) days annually; Holidays - thirteen (13) days off; Personal Days - two personal days after six months of service.
Pension plan: General Employees' Retirement System participation is required for all eligible employees. Each employee contributes a tax deferred deduction of 10% of their salary to the plan and the City contributes a like amount. The defined benefit pension plan is based on the average of the last three base salary years times 3% times years of service. If an employee leaves the employ of the City prior to seven (7) year vesting or retirement, their contribution, with interest, is refundable. Fire pension participants contribute 11.6% and are required to participate in the Pompano Beach Police & Firefighters' Retirement System.
Other benefits offered to City employees include: cost of living adjustments (when applicable), tuition reimbursement, tax deferred savings plan, credit union services, direct deposit, sick leave bank, sick leave to vacation conversion, employee assistance program, Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP), Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Account (VEBA), and a four day work week for certain positions.
Part time employees are not eligible for benefits and benefits may vary depending on bargaining units.
