The Automotive/Equipment Technician I is responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of City vehicles, light and heavy equipment, and/or small engines, ensuring minimal downtime.

The hiring range for this position is: $47,611.20 - $65,457.60, DOQ.

Essential Job Functions

Diagnoses and performs mechanical repair work on vehicles, trucks and heavy equipment: Overhauls all major components, including engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, air conditioning units, differentials; and other components; repairs and rebuilds carburetors, front ends, alternators and hydraulic systems.
Performs a variety of preventive maintenance duties at regularly scheduled intervals, including changing oil, lubricating, replacing hoses and belts, replacing brakes, checking lights, tuning engines and changing, and or rotating tires on vehicles. Conducts road tests after repair work is completed to ensure that vehicles are mechanically safe and function properly.
Maintains inventory of shop parts and supplies: inventories and orders regularly used parts and supplies; researches and orders parts/tools for specific vehicle repair and maintenance needs; verifies accuracy of received orders; and keeps shop tools and equipment in working order.
Performs state inspections and government required bus/vehicle inspections. Performs body work and painting as needed.
Refers to service manuals, parts manual, repair manuals, technical bulletins, scan tool, policy and procedure manuals, computer manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, and other items as needed.
Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment, and machinery such as buses, medium and heavy duty trucks, salt spreader, boats, computer, etc.
Fabricates, welds, and uses a variety of hand and power tools, lifts, diagnostic equipment, such as air tools, hand tools, welder, torch set, plasma cutter, lift, standard office tools, and others as needed to complete essential functions; utilizes a variety of supplies such as oil, hydraulic fluid, antifreeze, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, general office supplies, etc.
Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing Detroit Diagnostic, Allison DOC, Cummins Insite, Faster Fleet Maintenance, word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Fleet Manager, coworkers, City employees, vendors, manufacturers, and the general public as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Remain available to work during emergency situations. Required to furnish own tools.
Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Required Qualifications

High School diploma or GED required, supplemented by vocational training or a technical degree in Automotive/Equipment Technology; supplemented by one year of experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities for this position.

Certified Safety Inspector License; Certified Emissions Inspector License and ASE Certification are preferred. Experience working on school buses is also preferred.

Special Requirements

Driver's license is required. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Class A or B commercial driver’s license within five months of hire. Must furnish own tools.
The current schedule for this position is Tuesday through Friday, 6:00 am - 4:30 pm.
