Salary:

The work schedule for this position consists of a 40-hour work week in addition to a rotating standby schedule, subject to call: 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Responsible for the maintenance and operation of water and sewer systems including, but not limited to, the indoor and outdoor work in operation, maintenance, and construction of water well field, water treatment plant, water distribution, and wastewater collection and pumping systems. Maintain water and sewer systems per federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) requirements and ensure all required testing is completed on a timely basis. Maintain equipment, tools, and work areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition. Must perform duties in accordance with the State Board of Health, IOSHA, and Utility Treatment and Distribution Standards, Safety Rules, Regulations and Practices. Receive and perform verbal or written orders from the Water & Sewer Working Foreman, Utility Director, or designee. Perform less skilled or any other miscellaneous duties as required in the same or other departments. Communicates in-person, over the phone, and via email with the general public, other City employees, vendors, management, contractors, engineers, and consultants. Attend Continuing Education to maintain DSL and WT3 operating licenses.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or equivalent. Must have minimum IDEM Water Treatment Operator Grade WT3 Certification and Distribution Grade DSL certification. The certifications must be maintained and continuously renewed by acquiring the minimum Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) as required by IDEM. Equivalent certifications from other states will be accepted, however the employee must be able to obtain the IDEM WT3 and DSL certifications within 2 years of award date. Must have, or be able to obtain within 90 days, a valid Class B CDL. Employment termination will occur if there is failure to obtain the Indiana WT3 and DSL certifications within 2 years, and/or Class B CDL within 90 days, of the award date of employment. Must have, or obtain, OSHA 30-Hour Certification. Must have at least 5 years of experience in operation, maintenance, and construction of water treatment plant, water distribution system, and wastewater collection and pumping systems. Must have experience and be able to safely operate a backhoe, trencher, dump truck, skid steer, and vac truck. Must be trained in confined space, first aid, CPR. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have completed entire series of Hepatitis A and B vaccinations prior to award date; or received the initial dose of each vaccine prior to award date and must then receive the second dose within 30 days of award date. Must be professional, pleasant, well-groomed, and well mannered. Must be able to climb ladders and work around and with heavy machinery. Must be able to work safely in confined spaces. Must be able to review and interpret drawings. Must be able to read and communicate in a positive and respectful manner with co-workers, other departments, and the general public. Must have the ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions, and perform all duties as assigned. Must be willing to perform less skilled or any other miscellaneous duties as required in the same or other departments. Some work may be performed in extreme weather conditions. 

PHYSCIAL REQUIREMENTS: May be required to take physical exam, respiratory examination and fit test. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands and arms. Must be able to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, sit, and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to lift and pull 50 lbs. and lift and pull 100 lbs. with mechanical or physical assistance.
