DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking a Lifeguard (Seasonal) to join its Recreation & Wellness/Aquatics team.
The potential candidate will play a key role in the following duties:
  • Observe swimming activities and deck safety of the public to comply with safety guidelines.
  • Enforce the rules listed in the staff manual and exhibited at the pool facility.
  • Maintain and operate basic pool maintenance and water safety equipment, vacuuming, brushing down sides, cleaning filters and setting up equipment (seats, ropes, umbrella, rescue tubes, backboards, etc.).
    • Some equipment may weigh up to 80 pounds.
  • Perform basic housekeeping activities such as checking restrooms, offices, porches and swimming areas.
  • May take chemical readings on the PH balance and the chlorine level every hour during operations.
  • Hose down the pool deck periodically during daily operation.
  • Participate in special classes required for lifeguard training.
  • Must always be courteous and cooperative with the public at all times.
  • Must possess excellent swimming skills.
  • Will perform duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or equivalent weight) may be required. There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve routine to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and basic written instructions. May have a basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. May require a basic knowledge of a particular subject area.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Must be certified in Lifeguard Training or Water Safety Instruction and First Aid/CPR.

PREFERENCES

  • Selected applicants who already possess the required certification must be certified by a city-approved agency.
  • Applicants who are not certified may receive certification through the Parks and Recreation Department at a low cost to the individual.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

SALARY INFORMATION
Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification. The salary range is:


Pay Grade 3

INCENTIVE DETAILS
  • $250 on first full two weeks of work after being hired.
* $250 after completing last two weeks of work for the season.
