Brief Description
Job Summary
Under general direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, provides current and accurate information to citizens of Greenville through video, photo and written storytelling. Conducts interviews, obtains video and produces content for City digital media platforms to include live broadcasts and on-scene reporting. Utilizes web and social media outlets to publish digital content and engage various audiences. Applies a significant degree of initiative and creative storytelling across all mediums. Assists in determining appropriate communications strategies for the City. Establishes and maintains relationships with contemporaries in City departments, neighborhood representatives, community activists, business partners, and other relevant sources to gather information and content ideas.
Job Duties
Essential Functions
% of Time
  • Create, Write, & Edit Content: Generate new and original content to engage various audiences across a wide variety of mediums. Work with a photographer, videographer, or independently to gather video, photos, interviews and information to produce and edit audio, video and written content. Ensure content is fully aligned with the City's mission and vision as well as integrated with publicity efforts.

  • Research Stories & Conduct Interviews: Research stories and conduct interviews to ensure factual content in all reporting and published stories. Attend assigned council, board, neighborhood and other public engagement meetings to report on new and ongoing projects and initiatives. Build internal and external sources and relationships to learn of and keep up with current events.

  • Support Communication Efforts: Research new trends and best practices in communications, multimedia journalism, videography, photography and social media to proactively identify new ways to engage audiences. Participate in team meetings and brainstorming sessions to assist others in content creation and/or communication methods.

Qualifications
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field.
  • Over two (2) years of experience as a reporter, producer, videographer, or in a related field.
  • One (1) year of experience conducting on-camera news reporting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Over one (1) year of experience working with workforce development groups, economic development initiatives, and/or small business support.
Driver's License Requirements
  • Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License.
Performance Requirements
Knowledge of:
  • Effective media, public relations and mass communications.
  • Journalistic principles, practices and techniques of disseminating information to the public through news; proficient in current social media mediums.
  • The news media, its structures and technology for reporting news.
  • All aspects of external communications, including - but not limited to - traditional and social (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook) media, podcasting, online communications, conferences, press and events.
  • Best practices and trends in marketing, identity building, and communication strategies.
Ability to:
  • Communicate and work with individuals at all levels within and outside the organization.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with neighborhood leaders, business owners, and other community stakeholders.
  • Apply principles of written communication, graphical layout and multimedia techniques appropriate to web-based communication, ensuring that work products are clear, usable and effectively convey the intended messages and information.
  • Conduct research, locating information related to the request and critically evaluating the research findings.
  • Stay abreast of City of Greenville issues and current news and matters related to the City's areas of focus.
  • Prioritize workload and manage time efficiently, meet deadlines and complete assignments in a timely manner.
  • Successfully complete time-sensitive and/or high-profile projects through collaboration, consensus and creativity.
  • Read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, and policies.
  • Make mathematical calculations and draw logical conclusions.
  • Write reports, prepare business letters, summarize meeting minutes, and compose emails in a clear and professional manner.
  • Utilize a variety of equipment (video camera, sound equipment, etc.) in producing and editing content for publication or broadcast.
  • Operate general office equipment to include scanner, printer, copier, telephone, and computer with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Utilize specialized software and systems to include Adobe Creative Suite.
Other Information
Working Conditions
Primary Work Location: Office environment and occasional outside work.

Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards including seasonal exposure to extreme temperatures, wetness, and/or humidity.
Physical Demands:
Constantly requires hearing and talking. Frequently requires standing, fine dexterity, walking, and vision. Occasionally requires lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, and twisting. Light strength demands includes frequently lifting up to 10 pounds and rarely lifting up to 20 pounds.
Mental Demands:
Constantly requires working closely with others as part of a team. Frequently requires time pressures, and performing multiple tasks simultaneously. Occasionally requires working in a noisy/distracting environment.
