Grand Valley State University is Hiring a Deputy Director for School Performance and Innovation - Charter Schools Near Grand Rapids, MI

The Deputy Director for School Performance and Innovation is responsible for leading activities to evaluate and increase the academic and organizational performance of schools chartered by the university, and the management of strategic relationships with people and organizations, to support increased school performance.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Manage the process to evaluate the academic results and organizational capacity of each school chartered by the university to identify material deficiencies that could affect the school's educational program, develop and implement strategies intended to remedy these deficiencies, and evaluate the efficacy of those strategies. Systematize monitoring and accountability procedures and transparency reporting of progress to schools. Create a more equitable, inclusive and innovative learning environment by developing and implementing new initiatives to meet the needs of historically underrepresented student populations in their schools or in other learning environments. Lead a team of professionals to ensure that Charter Schools Office ("CSO") resources are effectively deployed to provide academic support to school leaders and teachers, and that the CSO is well-positioned to identify and help solve problems. Liaise with school and network leaders to deploy sustained professional education programming, training, support, or other CSO resources at schools that exhibit a high risk of academic failure. Manage and continuously refine a professional education program of workshops, cohorts, and other networks of support that leverages the talent in the university community to help teachers and school leaders continuously develop in their professions. Oversee the collection, maintenance, analysis of school- and student-level data, and ensure that it is appropriately used for school evaluation purposes in accordance with applicable state and federal laws. Oversee the annual assessment of the capacity of each school to deliver superior academic, fiscal, and organizational performance, and in the fair, accurate, and timely reporting on this assessment to university stakeholders, school boards of directors, and the public. Participate in the process for reviewing applications for new charter schools, and the process to evaluate performance of an existing charter school at the end of its contract. Manage strategic relationships with potential charter applicants, nonprofit and philanthropic organizations, the media and other partner organizations. Liaise with schools and boards to encourage and support development of specialty programs such as preK, early-middle college and career and technical education. Foster and serve as a catalyst for education innovation. Review and initiate large-scale grant opportunities on behalf of schools and support the application process. Performs other duties as required/assigned by manager.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Master's degree in a relevant field of study.
  • 5 years of experience in education leadership with progressively increasing responsibilities.
  • 3 years of experience leading and supervising teams.
  • Demonstrated commitment to creating more equitable access to high-quality educational choices, especially for students in historically underserved communities.
  • Knowledge of charter school operations.
  • Superior experience in large-scale education evaluation and subsequent strategic planning.
  • Superior experience building and leading diverse teams of people, including contractors and vendors, to increase quality and equity in public schools.
  • Direct experience in developing and leading large-scale, sustained professional education initiatives.
  • Direct experience in developing, implementing, and overseeing school support and corrective actions to rapidly increase attainment of a quality educational program.
  • A high relational capacity.
  • Direct experience working with charter school operators or school vendors.
  • Direct experience working with other organizations involved improving public education, including other authorizers, state associations, state education agencies, nonprofits, and foundations.
  • Ability to work as part of a collegial team of professionals that solves problems together, supports each other, and advances together.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and analytical skills.
  • Successful experience with large-scale, systemic change management.
  • Experience working in, or with, a higher education institution, particularly colleges of education, to advance innovations in education.
  • Direct experience in oversight of large-scale accountability systems and implementation of K-12 continuous improvement measures.
  • Knowledge of specialty K-12 programs such as preschool, college and technical education, Montessori and how they contribute to the educational landscape to meet student needs.
  • Exceptional knowledge of the educational landscape and education innovation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED
  • 7 years of experience in education leadership with progressively increasing responsibilities.
  • 5 years of experience leading and supervising teams.
  • A Ph.D. in a relevant field of study.
  • Established relationships with major nonprofit, philanthropic, and other support organizations in metro Detroit and in Michigan.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal office environment. Periodic travel will be required to GVSU-chartered schools.
SALARY : $110,000 - $145,000, commensurate with experience
