City of Denton is Hiring a Traffic Signal Technician Near Denton, TX

This requisition expires on June 20, 2024, but may close earlier if the position is filled prior to the expiration date. 
Responsible for a variety of specialized tasks, including for but not limited to, skilled and technical work in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of the computerized traffic signal systemEssential Functions:
• Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains the central traffic masters and intersection controllers and monitors and reads computer reports to check system status and determine location and nature of problems
• Install and set up signal controllers, cabinets, time clocks, loop detectors, emergency vehicle detectors, poles and mast arms, span wire and pedestrian poles, flasher beacons, signal and pedestrian heads, and other traffic signal equipment
• Works independently and exercises skilled judgment in the performance of assigned duties
• Skills in troubleshooting to restore operation of traffic signal control devices that have undergone electrical, electronic equipment or electrical wire/cable failure due to vehicular accidents, vandalism, adverse weather, or construction crews
• Program computerized traffic signal controllers, with knowledge of phasing/timing schemes
• Installs, maintains, and repairs computerized closed loop signal system and school zone warning systems
• Work with Lead Technician to orders parts and equipment to maintain adequate stock levels of all maintenance parts necessary for both field and shop maintenance
• Maintains maintenance history record on each piece of major equipment
• Recommends to supervisors the replacement of equipment, based on maintenance history
• Interprets work using electronic schematics, wiring diagrams, and underground street intersection prints
• Maintain logs of work performed
• Assist in preparing drawings of traffic signal layouts, recommending signal timing, etc.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
• Ability to read blueprints
• Reviews plans for intersection modifications and additions and may assist in the inspection of contractor work
• Tests traffic signal control equipment and related devices to identify defects in electrical and electronic equipment
• Assists with collecting accurate data on speed and vehicular traffic (counts) using electronic mechanical and manual count meters and maintenance of such equipment
• Performs preventative maintenance
• Responds to emergencies at all hours as necessary (emergency standby duty)
• Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service
• Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors and the public
• Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with others
• Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance
Additional Duties:
• Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications/Acceptable Equivalency:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum of two years of experience in the traffic signal field OR a combination of related skills
  • IMSA Level 1 Certification
OR
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job
Core Competencies:
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers
Preferences:
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Prior traffic signal repair and maintenance experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Level II IMSA Traffic Signal Certification
Conditions of Employment:
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check
  • Must pass a physical examination
  • Capable of responding to emergencies at all times
  • Good physical dexterity; able to work in all types of weather; capable of digging, pulling wire, lifting heavy loads, standing for extended periods of time; capable of performing tedious work for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to work at above normal heights using safety equipment
  • Must be able to work in high volume traffic areas with certification
  • Ability to obtain Flagger Certification
  • Attain CPR and First Aid certification

Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids:
The essential functions of this position require the use of various hand and power tools such as a drill, saw, and jackhammer in order to install and maintain traffic signals. Also operates bucket trucks to work at above normal heights and in high volume traffic.
Environmental Factors:The essential functions of this position are mostly performed outside. While working outside, incumbent is exposed to various temperatures, humidity, noise levels, dust, fumes, high volume traffic, and above normal heights.
*Applicants who possess an Associate degree in Electronics with 2 years’ experience in the electronic field OR 4 years of experience in the transportation field involving traffic signals will be considered for the Traffic Signal Electronic Technician, starting at $20.392/hr.
