Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Summary: The City of Billings, Parks and Recreation Department is seeking employees for seasonal Weed Abatement positions. The purpose of these positions is to trim lawns and weed patches on private property throughout the city where vegetation is neglected and landowners are non-compliant with mow directives.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Must be 18 years of age, have a valid driver’s license and good driving record. Must have completed High School or it’s equivalent. Past related employment experience is a plus, for example, job experience with mowers, weed whackers, tree maintenance and landscaping will be given preference.

Employment Period: 2024 summer season

Pay Rate: Starts at $17.50 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties include locating problem properties from maps, photos and addresses provided, documenting the treatment applied with dated, time-stamped before-and-after photographs, and then mowing and/or weed-whacking problem vegetation until the property is compliant with city vegetation codes. Occasionally you will be asked to assist the Forestry or Invasive Plant Control Technicians with duties such as tree, planting, watering, mulching, stump grinding or treating buckthorn or other invasive plants.

Physical Requirements:

• Able to work with power mowers (push or riding), weed whackers, chainsaws, shovels, rakes and brooms. Able to learn camera use and how to communicate and transfer information using computers. May occasionally be asked to help apply herbicides.
• Capable of walking in areas with uneven terrain and occasional steep inclines with deep grass, overgrown shrubs, down wood, and sometimes, assorted “junk” on properties.
• Work sometimes involves using repetitive motions for periods of up to 1/2 hour or more frequent bending at the knees or waist and twisting or turning of the upper body.
• Must be able to grip and grasp tools for periods of 1/2 hour or longer and occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs and push or pull objects weighing up to 150 lbs.
